Learn what blackjack is, how to beat the dealer, card values, payouts and basic strategy, plus common variants and sweepstakes play.
Blackjack is a card game where you play against the dealer, not the other players, and try to finish with a hand closer to 21 than the dealer's without going over. It is the casino table game where your decisions matter most: with correct play the house keeps only about half a percent of what you bet, and with hunch play it keeps several times that.
On this page: Quick answer · Card values · A full round · Your options · Dealer rules · Payouts · House edge · Basic strategy · Variants · RNG vs live · Sweepstakes · Myths · History · Mistakes · FAQ · Our take

What is blackjack? A card game against the dealer: get closer to 21 without busting. Card values, a full round, payouts, the 0.41% house edge, variants and history.
Blackjack is a card game you play against the dealer. You and the dealer each build a hand, and the hand closer to 21 wins, as long as it doesn't go over. Number cards count their number, Jacks, Queens and Kings count 10, and an Ace counts 1 or 11. An Ace plus a 10-value card as your first two cards is a blackjack, which usually pays 3 to 2.
What makes blackjack different from almost every other casino game is that your decisions matter. The dealer follows a fixed rule. You choose when to hit, stand, double, split or surrender , and those choices decide how much the game costs you. Played by the chart, a standard game has a house edge of about 0.41%. Copy the dealer instead and it is 5.68%. This guide explains how the game works, why the dealer still wins in the long run, what each choice is worth, and how variants, online games and sweepstakes play change the picture. Every number on this page comes from our own simulations and exact calculations.

Quick answer
Goal: beat the dealer's hand. You don't need 21, you just need a higher total than the dealer, or to stay in while the dealer busts.
Cards: 2 to 10 count face value, J/Q/K count 10, an Ace counts 1 or 11.
Bust: go over 21 and you lose immediately, even if the dealer busts later. That ordering is the whole source of the house edge.
Blackjack: an Ace plus a 10-value card as your first two cards. It usually pays 3:2.
The dealer has no choices. They draw to 16 and stand on 17 or more (some tables hit soft 17).
Skill matters. A free chart, basic strategy , tells you the best move for every hand.

Card values and soft vs hard hands
Card Value
2-9 Face value
10, J, Q, K 10
Ace 1 or 11, whichever helps the hand without busting
Suits never matter in standard blackjack (they only matter in some side bets ). Because four ranks count 10, about 4 in every 13 cards (31%) are worth 10. That single fact explains most strategy: when the dealer shows a 6, assume a 10 underneath and they are stuck on 16.
Soft hand: a hand with an Ace counted as 11. A,6 is "soft 17". You can't bust it with one card, because the Ace can drop to 1.
Hard hand: no Ace, or an Ace that must count as 1. 10,6 is hard 16, and so is A,5,10.
Soft hands are why players get confused. A,6 plus a 9 is not 26 and a bust; it becomes hard 16. Treat soft hands as a chance to draw or double safely, not as a finished total. More: card values , hard vs soft hands , scoring .

A full round, step by step
Read the table rules. Before betting, find three lines: the blackjack payout (3:2 or 6:5), whether the dealer stands or hits soft 17, and the number of decks. Online, it's in the info or "i" panel.
Bet. Place your chips (or Gold Coins or Sweeps Coins at a sweepstakes site) inside the table's minimum and maximum.
The deal. You get two cards face up. The dealer gets one face up (the upcard ) and, in American-style games, one face down (the hole card ).
Dealer peek. If the upcard is an Ace or a 10-value card, the dealer checks for blackjack. With an Ace up you're offered insurance first. If the dealer has blackjack, the round ends and you lose (unless you also have one, which pushes).
You act. Surrender, split, double, hit or stand, in that order of availability. You can hit as many times as you like until you stand or bust.
The dealer acts. They turn over the hole card and draw by fixed rules until they reach 17 or more, or bust.
Settle. Higher total wins 1:1. Equal totals push. A natural blackjack pays 3:2.

Worked example
You bet 10 Gold Coins. You're dealt 7 and 4 (hard 11) . The dealer shows a 6 .
Your decision: basic strategy says double down on 11 against a 6. You add 10 more (20 at risk) and get exactly one card: a 9 . You have 20 .
Why double here: a dealer 6 is the weakest upcard. In our calculation the dealer busts about 42% of the time from a 6, and 11 is the best possible starting total because so many cards are worth 10.
The dealer's turn: the hole card is a 10 , giving hard 16. The dealer must hit: a 7 makes 23. Dealer busts.
Result: you win 20 Gold Coins on top of your 20 stake.
Same hand, different spot: had the dealer shown an Ace , you'd just hit 11 on a stand-soft-17 shoe (double it if the dealer hits soft 17), because the dealer is far stronger. Same cards, opposite move. The upcard drives almost every decision.

Your options
Option What it does When it's usually right
Hit Take another card Totals of 11 or less; 12-16 against a dealer 7 or higher
Stand Keep your total, end your turn Hard 17+; 13-16 against a dealer 2-6
Double down Double your bet, take exactly one card 10 or 11 against weaker upcards; some soft hands against 3-6
Split Turn a pair into two hands, matching bet Always Aces and 8s; never 10s or 5s
Surrender Give up half your bet, end the hand (first decision only) Hard 16 vs 9, 10, A; hard 15 vs 10
Insurance Side bet (half your stake) that the dealer has blackjack, pays 2:1 Basically never, unless you're counting cards
Even money Take 1:1 on your blackjack when the dealer shows an Ace Same bet as insurance, so decline it
Edge cases worth knowing:
Split Aces usually get one card each , and Ace + 10 after a split counts as 21, not a blackjack, so it pays 1:1.
Double after split (DAS) may or may not be allowed. It's in the rules panel and it changes a few pair decisions.
Surrender is often missing online. If it's not in the button row, it's not offered.
Insurance math: in a six-deck shoe, insurance has a house edge of roughly 7%, about 15 times worse than the main game played well.

The dealer follows a fixed script, with two variations that matter:
S17 (dealer stands on soft 17): the dealer stops at A,6. Better for you.
H17 (dealer hits soft 17): the dealer draws to A,6 and sometimes improves. It adds about 0.2% to the house edge and flips a few chart cells (11 vs A becomes a double, for example).
Peek (hole card): in American-style games the dealer checks for blackjack before you act, so you only lose your original bet to a dealer natural. In European no-hole-card games the dealer takes a second card after you play, and many tables then take your doubles and splits too if it's blackjack. That's why European strategy never doubles 11 against a 10 or Ace.

The dealer plays after everyone else and follows one fixed rule: hit until reaching 17 or more, then stop. The only variation is soft 17. Most tables print it on the felt or in the rules panel: "Dealer stands on soft 17" (S17) or "Dealer hits soft 17" (H17). The dealer can't double, split or surrender, and never makes a choice based on your hand.
Because the rule is fixed, the dealer's chance of busting depends only on the upcard. Our exact calculation for 6 decks with the dealer standing on soft 17 gives these figures. For a 10 or Ace, they are after the dealer has checked for blackjack and doesn't have one, which is the situation you are in when you play your hand.
Dealer upcard 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 A
Dealer busts 35.4% 37.4% 39.6% 41.8% 42.3% 26.2% 24.4% 22.9% 23.0% 16.7%

Our dealer-bust table
We calculated how often the dealer busts from each upcard (infinite deck, S17, after the peek for 10 and Ace). These are the numbers behind "stand on 12-16 against a 2-6".
Dealer shows 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 A
Dealer busts 35.4% 37.4% 39.4% 41.6% 42.3% 26.2% 24.5% 22.8% 23.0% 16.7%
Notice the cliff between 6 and 7. Against 2-6 the dealer breaks often enough that you can let them take the risk. Against 7 or more the dealer usually makes a hand, so a stiff 12-16 must hit. Full breakdown: dealer bust probability , dealer rules .

Insurance (5 side bet) wins 2:1 15 on the side bet; main bet lost
3:2 vs 6:5: you're dealt a natural about 4.7% of the time. A 6:5 table pays 0.3 units less on each one, which works out to roughly 1.4% of everything you bet. That's more than every other common rule change combined. If a table says "Blackjack pays 6 to 5", find another table. Details: 3:2 vs 6:5 , payouts .

House edge and how rules move it
The house edge is the average share of each bet you lose over time. For blackjack it depends on two things: the table rules and your decisions. Approximate figures from published rule-variation tables (see sources), measured against a 6-deck, S17, double-after-split, no-surrender, 3:2 baseline of roughly 0.4% to 0.5% for perfect basic strategy:
Rule Approximate effect on house edge
Blackjack pays 6:5 instead of 3:2 about +1.4%
Dealer hits soft 17 about +0.2%
No double after split about +0.14%
Double on 10-11 only about +0.2%
European no-hole-card (lose doubles/splits to a natural) about +0.1%
Late surrender offered about −0.08%
Resplit Aces allowed about −0.08%
Single deck instead of six about −0.5%
(Minus is better for you.) Hunch play typically costs 2% or more, mostly through not doubling, standing on 12 against 2 or 3, and taking insurance.
What 0.5% means in practice: if you play 100 hands at 10 coins, you've wagered 1,000 and the average loss is about 5. Single sessions swing far more than that in both directions. More: house edge , rule changes , RTP , variance .

Basic strategy in one chart
Basic strategy is the mathematically best play for every hand against every upcard, worked out first in 1956 and refined by computer since. This mini version is for 4-8 decks, dealer stands on soft 17, double after split allowed, late surrender . It covers most hands you'll see; the full strategy chart covers every cell.

Common variants
Variant Key difference Effect on you
Classic / American Hole card, dealer peeks The standard
European No hole card, usually 2 decks Slightly worse; don't double into a 10/A
Atlantic City / Vegas Strip 8 or 4 decks, late surrender common Close to standard
Single deck / Double deck Fewer decks Better, if it still pays 3:2
Spanish 21 10s removed, many player bonuses Needs its own strategy

Blackjack Switch Swap cards between two hands Naturals pay 1:1
Double Exposure Both dealer cards face up Ties usually lose

Sweepstakes casinos run blackjack with two virtual currencies instead of cash bets:
Gold Coins (GC) are for fun only and have no cash value. You get them free daily or buy them in bundles.
Sweeps Coins (SC) come free (daily login, bonus with GC packs, and a no purchase necessary mail-in request). Winnings in SC can be redeemed for prizes, usually cash, once you meet the site's playthrough, minimum redemption and ID checks.
The hand rules are the same as anywhere. What changes:
Table rules vary by game. Check the payout, decks and soft-17 rule in the info panel. The same site can run a 3:2 game and a 6:5 game side by side.
Playthrough. SC usually has to be played through (often 1x) before redemption. Some sites weight table games differently or exclude them from bonus play. Read the terms for blackjack specifically.
Eligibility. Sweepstakes play is restricted in several US states, and the list differs by brand and changes. Check before you sign up: state restrictions , eligibility .
Availability. Not every sweeps site has blackjack, and fewer have live tables. On 2026-10-13 we confirmed blackjack titles on Stake.us 's public blackjack lobby page. Other brands are Not verified yet until we open their lobbies.
Start at the sweepstakes blackjack hub , then Gold Coins , Sweeps Coins and redemption rules .

At sweepstakes casinos blackjack plays the same way: same cards, same chart. What's different is the coins.
Gold Coins are for fun play and have no cash value. You get them free when you sign up and through daily bonuses, or you can buy a Gold Coin pack. They are the best way to practise the chart with nothing at stake. See what are Gold Coins .
Sweeps Coins are promotional coins. No purchase necessary: they come free with daily bonuses, promotions and mail-in requests (AMOE), and some Gold Coin packs include them as a bonus. Sweeps Coins won in play can be redeemed for prizes, under each site's rules. See what are Sweeps Coins , how to get free Sweeps Coins and mail-in Sweeps Coins (AMOE) .

Myths
"The goal is to get 21." The goal is to beat the dealer. Standing on 13 against a 6 wins more than chasing 21.
"Bad players at the table ruin your odds." Other players' choices change which cards you get, but they're as likely to help as hurt. Long-run, your edge doesn't change.
"Always assume the hole card is a 10." A useful shortcut for intuition, but only about 31% of cards are 10s. The chart already accounts for the real odds.
"You're due after a losing streak." Every RNG hand is a fresh shuffle. There is no "due".
"Betting systems can beat the game." Martingale and friends change the shape of results, not the edge. See betting systems .
"Card counting is illegal." Using your brain is legal, though casinos can refuse your play. Online RNG makes it pointless anyway. More: blackjack myths .

A short history
Blackjack grew out of European "21" games: Cervantes mentions veintiuna in early 1600s Spain, and the French vingt-et-un was popular in the 1700s before the game crossed to North America. The popular story is that US gambling halls added a bonus for a hand with the Ace of spades and a black Jack, and the name stuck after the bonus was dropped. In 1956 four US Army mathematicians (Baldwin, Cantey, Maisel and McDermott) published the first near-optimal strategy, and in 1962 Edward Thorp's Beat the Dealer showed that card counting could give players an edge, which pushed casinos to multi-deck shoes. Online RNG blackjack followed in the 1990s, live dealer streams in the 2000s, and sweepstakes versions more recently. More: history of blackjack .

Beginner mistakes
Playing a 6:5 table without noticing. Costs about 1.4% of every bet, more than any other single error.
Taking insurance or even money. A side bet with an edge around 7%.
Standing on 12 against a 2 or 3. The dealer busts only 35-37% of the time from those cards; you need to improve.
Not doubling. Players who never double 10 and 11 against weak upcards give away the moments when the game favours them.
Splitting 10s. A 20 wins most of the time. Breaking it up throws that away.
Never hitting soft hands. A,6 can't bust with one card. Standing on soft 17 is always wrong.
Chasing losses with bigger bets. It doesn't change the edge, only how fast a session ends.

FAQ
Is blackjack luck or skill? Both. Each hand is luck, but your choices change the long-run edge by 2% or more. It's the casino game where skill matters most. See luck or skill .
What happens if the dealer and I both have 21? It's a push and you get your bet back. One exception: a natural blackjack beats a three-card 21. See dealer and player 21 .
How many decks are used? Usually six or eight in shoes, one or two in hand-held games, and an infinite "virtual deck" or per-hand shuffle in most RNG games. See how many decks .
Can you play blackjack for free? Yes. Demo modes and Gold Coin tables at sweepstakes casinos cost nothing to play. See free blackjack .
Can you beat blackjack? With basic strategy you lose slowly; you don't win long-term. Card counting can create a small edge in dealt shoe games, but not in RNG or continuously shuffled games. See is blackjack beatable .
What does "soft 17" mean? A 17 that includes an Ace counted as 11, such as A,6. Whether the dealer hits or stands on it is one of the most important table rules. See dealer hits soft 17 .
Is blackjack legal at sweepstakes casinos? Sweepstakes casinos operate under promotional sweepstakes rules rather than gambling licences, and several states restrict them. Check your state first: is sweepstakes blackjack legal .
Is Five Card Charlie a real rule? Not in standard blackjack. A few home games and variants use it. See Five Card Charlie .

Our take
Blackjack is the best first table game to learn, for three reasons. First, the gap between good and bad play is real: roughly 0.5% against 2% or more. Second, closing that gap takes one free chart, not years of practice. Third, the rules are printed on the table, so you can tell a good game (3:2, S17, surrender) from a bad one (6:5, H17) in ten seconds. Those are our opinions, and the reasons are the numbers on this page.
It is still a game you lose to over time. Strategy makes your coins last longer and makes the game more interesting. It does not turn blackjack into income, and that includes Sweeps Coin play.

What is blackjack? The game at a glance
Blackjack, also called twenty-one, is a comparing card game between each player and the dealer. Here is the whole game in a few lines. Our blackjack rules guide covers every rule and edge case in full.
The goal is to beat the dealer. You win when your final total is closer to 21 than the dealer's, or when the dealer goes over and you don't. Reaching 21 is not the goal in itself. A 17 that beats a dealer 16 wins just as much as a 21.
Going over 21 is a bust. A busted hand loses at once, even if the dealer busts later.
Ties push. If you and the dealer finish on the same total, your bet comes back. A blackjack beats any other 21, including a three-card 21.
You play against the dealer only. Every seat is a separate contest with the dealer's hand. Other players are not your opponents.
The dealer has no choices. The dealer draws to 17 and then stops, following the table's posted rule. You make all the decisions.
Wins pay 1 to 1, blackjack pays 3 to 2. On a 10-coin bet a normal win pays 10 and a blackjack pays 15. Some tables pay only 6 to 5 for blackjack, which costs a lot more than it looks.

Why blackjack is called a game of skill
In roulette or a slot, nothing you do changes the house edge. In blackjack the same table can cost you 0.41% or 6% of what you bet, depending only on how you play. That gap comes from the information you have: you see one of the dealer's cards before you decide, and the best play changes with it. Basic strategy is the set of decisions that gets the most out of that information. It doesn't make blackjack a winning game, but it makes it one of the cheapest games in a casino.

Card values and hand totals
Suits never matter in blackjack. Only the values count.
Card Value
2 to 10 Face value
Jack, Queen, King 10
Ace 1 or 11, whichever helps the hand
Four ranks are worth 10 (10, J, Q, K), so 16 of every 52 cards, or 30.8%, count 10. That one fact explains much of basic strategy. When you guess at the dealer's hidden card, a 10-value card is the single most likely answer, even though it is still less likely than not.

Not present

Hard and soft hands
A hand is soft when it holds an Ace that is still counted as 11. A+6 is soft 17 . It is called soft because no single card can bust it: if a big card would take it over 21, the Ace drops to 1 and the hand carries on. Draw a 9 to A+6 and you have hard 16 (1 + 6 + 9), not a bust.
A hand is hard when it has no Ace, or when every Ace in it has to count as 1. 10+6 is hard 16. A+6+9 is also hard 16, because counting the Ace as 11 would make 26.
This matters for two reasons. First, you can play soft hands more aggressively. Hitting soft 17 is never a risk to bust, so the chart hits or doubles it every time. Second, the dealer's rule on soft 17 is one of the most important table rules. Some dealers stand on soft 17 and some hit it. A dealer who hits soft 17 adds about 0.22 points to the house edge.

Not present

Edge cases
Two Aces. A+A is soft 12, because only one Ace can count 11 at a time (11 + 11 = 22). That is why you split them.
Blackjack versus 21. Blackjack means exactly two cards: an Ace and a 10-value card. A+5+5 is 21 but not a blackjack. It pays 1 to 1 and loses to a dealer blackjack.
Blackjack after a split. An Ace and a 10 on a split hand counts as 21, not a blackjack, at almost every table. It pays 1 to 1.
How often you get one. With 6 decks, a blackjack comes on 4.75% of your first two cards, about one hand in 21. With a single deck it is 4.83%.
Blackjack against a dealer blackjack is a push. You get your bet back, not 3 to 2.
Blackjack on a split hand pays 1 to 1 at almost every table.
Surrender returns half your bet. You can't surrender after hitting or after the dealer has shown a blackjack.
Insurance is a separate bet of up to half your main bet. If the dealer has blackjack, insurance wins 2 to 1 and your main bet loses (unless you have a blackjack too). The two roughly cancel, which is why players think it "protects" them. It doesn't. It just loses 7.4% on average.
Roulette. Every standard single-zero bet has the same 2.70% edge. In double-zero roulette every bet is 5.26% except the five-number bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3), which is 7.89%.
Baccarat Banker. The Banker bet wins more often than Player, so it pays 0.95 to 1 (a 5% commission). Without the commission it would favour the player.
Speed. A lower edge is not the whole story. What you lose on average is edge × total amount bet, so fast games with many rounds cost more per hour at the same edge.
Five Card Charlie (an automatic win with five cards that don't bust) is not a standard rule. Some variants and home games use it. If a table offers it, the rules panel will say so.
Side bets such as Perfect Pairs or 21+3 are separate bets with their own, usually much higher, house edge. They don't change the main game.

One round of blackjack, start to finish
Every round follows the same order. The how to play blackjack guide walks through your first hands at a table. Here is the order and one fully worked round.
Bets. Every player places a bet before any card is dealt.
The deal. Each player gets two cards, usually face up. The dealer gets one face-up card, the upcard, and one face-down card, the hole card.
The peek. If the upcard is an Ace or a 10, the dealer checks the hole card for blackjack. If it is a blackjack, the round ends at once and you lose your bet unless you also have a blackjack, which pushes. Before the peek with an Ace up, you are offered insurance .
Your turn. You play your hand: hit, stand, double, split or surrender. Each player finishes before the next one starts.
The dealer's turn. The dealer turns over the hole card and draws until reaching 17 or more. There are no choices.
Settling. Every hand still in play is compared with the dealer's. Wins are paid, losses are taken and ties push.

Worked example: a 10-coin bet
You bet 10 coins. You are dealt 7 and 4, hard 11. The dealer shows a 6.
The deal. A 6 is one of the dealer's weakest upcards. The dealer busts 42.3% of the time with a 6 showing, and you have 11, which can't bust with one card. Any 10 makes 21.
You double. You put out another 10 coins and get exactly one more card. It is a 9, so you finish on 20 with 20 coins at risk. Doubling here is clearly right: our exact calculation gives +0.677 per coin of starting bet for doubling, against +0.338 for just hitting. Per 100 coins of starting bets, doubling is worth 33.8 coins more than hitting.
The dealer plays. The hole card is a 10, so the dealer has 16. The rule says draw to 17, so the dealer must hit. The card is a 7, making 23. Bust.
Settle. You win 1 to 1 on everything at risk: 20 coins. Had the dealer drawn a 4 or 5, a 20 or 21, you would have pushed or lost, and that would still have been the right play. Good decisions are judged by their average result, not by one hand.

Your choices and what each one is worth
You have up to six choices on a hand. Each has a price, and the best one is the one with the highest average result. The figures below come from our exact calculation for 6 decks with the dealer standing on soft 17, as an average result per 100 coins of starting bet.
Choice What it means Example Best play Next best
Hit Take another card 12 vs dealer 2 Hit: −25.3 Stand: −29.3
Stand Take no more cards 16 vs dealer 6 Stand: −15.8 Hit: −42.5

Split Split a pair into two hands, add an equal bet 8,8 vs dealer 10 Split: −47.5 Hit: −53.5
Surrender Give up the hand, get half your bet back 16 vs dealer 10 Surrender: −50.0 Hit: −53.5

Why these plays are right
Hit 12 against a 2. It looks wrong to hit a hand that can bust on a 10. But a dealer 2 only busts 35.4% of the time, so standing on 12 loses too often. Hitting busts on 10s (30.8% of cards) but improves you the rest of the time. The gap is small, 4.0 coins per 100, but it is real. Against a 4, 5 or 6 the dealer busts more often, so the chart stands.
Stand on 16 against a 6. A dealer 6 busts 42.3% of the time. If you hit 16, more than half the deck busts you. Standing and letting the dealer take the risk is worth 26.8 coins per 100 more.
Double 11 against a 6. You are likely to finish strong and the dealer is likely to bust. A double puts more money on the table exactly when you are the favourite. Doubling makes +67.7 per 100 coins of starting bet, double the +33.8 from hitting.
Split 8s against a 10. Hard 16 is the worst hand in blackjack. Two hands starting from 8 are each worse than average, but together they lose less than one 16 does: −47.5 against −53.5 for hitting.
Surrender 16 against a 10. Where it is allowed, giving up half your bet (−50.0) beats playing on (−53.5 for the best of hitting or standing). It is one of the few hands where losing half is the good result.
Skip insurance. Insurance pays 2 to 1 if the dealer has blackjack. With 6 decks and an Ace showing, the hole card is a 10 only 30.9% of the time (96 of the 311 unseen cards), so the bet loses 7.4% on average. Our simulation of a player who always takes it shows the cost: the house edge rises from 0.41% to 0.68%.

16 against a 10 without surrender. Hitting (−53.5) is only slightly better than standing (−54.0). Either way it is a bad hand. The chart says hit.
12 against a 4. Standing (−20.9) barely beats hitting (−21.2). The chart says stand.
11 against an Ace. In 6 decks with the dealer standing on soft 17, hitting (+14.7) beats doubling (+12.3), because the dealer peeks first and an Ace upcard is strong. Many tables where the dealer hits soft 17 flip this to a double.
Even money. If you have a blackjack and the dealer shows an Ace, you may be offered even money: 1 to 1 now instead of risking a push. It is the same as insurance and costs about 3.9% of your bet. Declining is worth 1.039 bets on average, against exactly 1 for even money.

Not present

What this means for you
2 to 6 are the bust cards. The dealer has to draw at least one more card from a weak total, and a stiff total of 12 to 16 busts on a big card. Against these upcards the chart stands on most stiff hands and doubles freely.
7 to Ace are strong cards. A 7 makes 17 with a 10 underneath. The dealer finishes with 17 to 21 three times out of four or more, so you need a real hand. That is why the chart hits stiff hands against them.
Why a 6 busts more than a 5. One reason: with a 6 the dealer can't reach 17 to 21 on one card, except by drawing an Ace for soft 17, and then stops. With a 5, an Ace makes soft 16, which has to keep drawing. Over all upcards the dealer busts 28.2% of the time when standing on soft 17.
Soft 17. When the dealer hits soft 17, the bust rate with a 6 up goes from 42.3% to 43.9% and the overall rate from 28.2% to 28.6%. But the dealer also turns some 17s into 18 to 21. Overall, hitting soft 17 adds about 0.22 points to the house edge.

Not present

Where the house edge comes from
If the dealer follows a fixed rule and you could follow the same rule, why does the casino win? The answer is the order of play.
You act first. If you bust, you lose straight away, and the dealer doesn't need to play. If the dealer busts later in the same round, your bet is already gone. So whenever you both would have busted, the dealer wins. That is the whole source of the house edge.

Not present

Worked example: copying the dealer
Imagine a player who copies the dealer exactly: hit to 17, never double, never split. Our simulation of this player over 800 million rounds gives a house edge of 5.68%. Here is where it comes from:
Effect Value per round, starting bets
Hands where you both bust: the dealer wins −7.94%
Your blackjacks pay 3 to 2, not 1 to 1 +2.27%
Everything else (same rule on both sides) 0
House edge −5.68%
The blackjack bonus is 0.5 extra units on the 4.53% of rounds where you get a blackjack the dealer doesn't match: 0.5 × 4.53% = 2.27%. Adding that back to the 5.68% edge gives the cost of the double busts: 7.94%. As a cross-check, the dealer busts 28.19% of the time, and a player using the same rule busts about as often, so both bust in about 28.19% × 28.19% = 7.95% of rounds. The two routes agree.

How basic strategy wins it back
Basic strategy uses the two things the dealer doesn't have: information and options.
Information. You see the dealer's upcard. Against a 2 to 6 you stand on stiff hands, so you bust less in exactly the rounds where the dealer is likely to bust. That attacks the double-bust problem directly.
Options. You can double and split. Those put extra money on the table when you are the favourite, such as 11 against a 6. The dealer can never do that.
Together they bring the edge down from 5.68% to 0.41%. They can't remove it, because you still have to act first. Our blackjack house edge guide goes deeper into how the edge is measured and what moves it.

Not present

Edge case: per starting bet or per coin wagered?
The 0.41% is measured per starting bet. Because you sometimes double and split, the average round puts 1.13 starting bets at risk. Measured per coin actually wagered, the edge is 0.41 ÷ 1.13 = 0.36%. Both are correct, but most published figures, including ours, use the starting bet, because that is what you choose before the cards come.

How often you win, lose and push
Even with perfect basic strategy you lose more rounds than you win. Our 800-million-round simulation of the standard game counts each round's result in starting bets:
Result of the round Share of rounds
Lose 3 or more bets 0.26%
Lose 2 bets 4.20%
Lose 1 bet 43.41%
Push 8.78%
Win 1 bet 32.64%
Win 1.5 bets (blackjack) 4.53%
Win 2 bets 5.86%
Win 3 or more bets 0.33%
Overall you win 43.4% of rounds, lose 47.9% and push 8.8%. That is 4.5 points more losses than wins. Yet the edge is only 0.41%.

Not present

Why you lose more often but only lose a little
Two kinds of round pay more than one unit:
Blackjacks. You get one in 4.53% of rounds where the dealer doesn't also have one, and they pay 1.5.
Doubles and splits. You double on 10.4% of rounds and split on 2.8%, and the chart only does that when you are the favourite. So more of the two-bet results are wins (5.86%) than losses (4.20%).
Those bigger wins almost cancel out the extra losing rounds. This is also why skipping a correct double costs so much. Doubling is where the game gives back the most.

Why 6:5 is the trap
A 6 to 5 payout sounds close to 3 to 2. It isn't. A 3:2 blackjack pays 1.5 times your bet, a 6:5 blackjack 1.2 times. You lose 0.3 of a bet on every paid blackjack, and paid blackjacks come on 4.53% of rounds: 4.53% × 0.3 = 1.36 points. Our simulation measures it directly: 0.41% at 3:2 and 1.77% at 6:5. A 6:5 table costs you more than four times as much as the same table at 3:2. Pair it with a dealer who hits soft 17 and the edge is 1.98%. Even-money blackjack (1 to 1) is worse still, adding 2.27 points.
Check the payout line before your first hand. It is usually printed on the felt or at the top of the game's rules panel.

Skill matters: house edge by playing style
To show how much skill matters, we simulated four players at the same table: 6 decks, dealer stands on soft 17, double after split , 3:2. Each one played 800 million rounds (400 million for the no-doubles player).
Playing style What they do House edge
Never bust Stand on every hard 12 or more 6.01%
Copy the dealer Hit to 17, never double or split 5.68%
No doubles or splits Basic strategy for hitting and standing only 2.34%
Basic strategy Every decision by the chart 0.41%
Per 1,000 coins of starting bets, basic strategy costs about 4 coins on average. Copying the dealer costs about 57, and never busting about 60. The difference between the last two rows, about 1.9 points, is the value of doubling and splitting correctly. The difference between the first two and the third is the value of standing and hitting by the dealer's upcard.

Beginner mistakes that cost the most
Each of these comes from our exact calculation. The cost is in coins per 100 coins of starting bet, every time the hand comes up.
Mistake Right play Cost of the mistake
Hitting 16 against a 6 Stand 26.8
Splitting 10s against a 6 Stand on 20 24.8
Standing on soft 18 (A,7) against a 9 Hit 8.4
Not splitting 8s against a 10 Split 6.0
Not doubling 11 against a 10 Double 5.9
Standing on 12 against a 2 Hit 4.0
Splitting 9s against a 7 Stand on 18 3.6
Not doubling 10 against a 9 Double 3.1
Some of these surprise players. Soft 18 against a 9 looks like a good hand, but a dealer 9 makes 19 or better often, and soft 18 can't bust on one card, so hitting is right. 9,9 against a 7 is a stand because 18 already beats the dealer's most likely result: with a 7 up, the dealer finishes on exactly 17 in 36.9% of hands. The basic strategy guide explains every cell of the chart.

Blackjack vs other casino games
How cheap is blackjack compared with other table games? We calculated the other games exactly from their payouts and probabilities.
Game and bet House edge How it is calculated
Blackjack, basic strategy, 3:2 0.41% Our 800M-round simulation
Baccarat, Banker (8 decks, 5% commission) 1.06% Exact: Banker wins 45.86%, Player 44.62%, Tie 9.52%
Baccarat, Player 1.24% Same exact probabilities
Craps, Pass Line 1.41% Exact: 7/495
Blackjack, basic strategy, 6:5 1.77% Our simulation
Roulette, single zero 2.70% Exact: 1/37
Roulette, double zero 5.26% Exact: 2/38
Blackjack, copying the dealer 5.68% Our simulation
Baccarat, Tie at 8 to 1 14.36% Same exact probabilities
Blackjack with basic strategy is the cheapest game in this list. But the same game played badly is worse than double-zero roulette. Blackjack is the only game here where your decisions change the edge. In roulette, craps or baccarat the edge on a bet is fixed by the payout.

Basic strategy: the whole chart
Basic strategy is the best decision for every hand against every dealer upcard, using only your cards and the upcard. It was first worked out by Baldwin, Cantey, Maisel and McDermott in 1956 and has since been checked by computers. Ours comes from an exact calculation of every decision for 6 decks, dealer stands on soft 17, double after split and no surrender. The chart above is that whole chart.

How to read it
Find your hand on the left and the dealer's upcard along the top.
H hit, S stand.
Dh double if allowed, otherwise hit. Ds double if allowed, otherwise stand.
P split. Ph split if double after split is allowed, otherwise hit.
Check pairs first, then soft hands, then hard totals. Hard 5 to 7 always hits and hard 18 or more always stands.

The ideas behind it
You don't have to memorise the chart cell by cell. Most of it follows from five ideas:
Stand on stiff hands (12 to 16) against a dealer 2 to 6, hit them against a 7 to Ace. The exceptions are 12 against a 2 or 3, which hit, because those dealer cards bust less often.
Double 10 and 11 against most upcards, and 9 against a 3 to 6. You are likely to finish on a strong total with one card.
Always split Aces and 8s. Never split 10s or 5s. Two Aces are a weak soft 12 but two great starts. Two 8s are 16, the worst hand. Two 10s are already 20. Two 5s are 10, better doubled.
Double soft hands against a weak dealer. A soft hand can't bust on one card, so the chart doubles A,2 to A,7 against a 5 or 6, A,4 to A,7 against a 4 too, and A,6 and A,7 against a 3 as well.
Stand on soft 19 and above, hit soft 18 against a 9, 10 or Ace.
The basic strategy guide has the charts for other rule sets and explains every cell. The blackjack cheat sheet has printable versions. Our blackjack strategy guide covers what comes after basic strategy, including counting and betting systems.

Edge case: different tables need slightly different charts
The chart changes a little with the rules. When the dealer hits soft 17, 11 against an Ace becomes a double and soft 18 against a 2 becomes a double. With late surrender, you surrender 16 against a 9, 10 or Ace and 15 against a 10. Use the chart for the table you are at. The differences are small but real.

Not present

Table rules that change the house edge
The card rules are the same everywhere. The table rules aren't, and each one moves the house edge. We measured every rule change one at a time from the standard game (6 decks, S17, DAS, 3:2) in 800-million-round simulations, with basic strategy for each game.
Rule change Effect on the house edge
Blackjack pays 1 to 1 +2.27 points
Blackjack pays 6 to 5 +1.36 points
Dealer hits soft 17 +0.22 points
Double on 10 and 11 only +0.19 points
No double after split +0.14 points
No hole card, all bets lost to a dealer blackjack +0.11 points
Double on 9 to 11 only +0.10 points
No resplitting +0.06 points
8 decks instead of 6 +0.03 points
Late surrender −0.07 points
2 decks instead of 6 −0.21 points
1 deck instead of 6 −0.54 points
Early surrender −0.63 points
The three lines to check at any table are the blackjack payout (3:2, not 6:5), the soft 17 rule (stand is better for you) and double after split. Those three are most of the difference between a good and a bad table. Our blackjack rules guide explains every rule in this table with examples.

Not present

Worked example: comparing two tables
Table A: 8 decks, dealer hits soft 17, double after split, 3:2. Table B: 6 decks, dealer stands on soft 17, double after split, 6:5.
Table A: 0.41 + 0.03 + 0.22 = about 0.66%.
Table B: 0.41 + 1.36 = about 1.77%.
More decks and a dealer who hits soft 17 sound worse, but the 6:5 payout dwarfs both. Table A is the better table by more than a full point. (Adding rule effects one at a time is a close approximation, not an exact figure, because rules interact slightly.)

Short sessions are mostly luck
A 0.41% edge is tiny compared with the swings. One round has a standard deviation of about 1.15 starting bets, nearly 300 times the average loss per round. To see what that means in practice, we simulated 2 million flat-betting sessions of each length (400,000 for 10,000 rounds), betting 1 unit per round with basic strategy.
Session length Finished ahead Average result Middle 90% of sessions
10 rounds 45.6% −0.04 units −6 to +6
50 rounds 47.7% −0.20 units −13.5 to +13.5
100 rounds 47.7% −0.40 units −19.5 to +18.5
500 rounds 46.4% −2.0 units −44.5 to +40.5
1,000 rounds 45.3% −4.0 units −64 to +56
10,000 rounds 36.2% −40.2 units
"Finished ahead" means strictly up. Pushes and break-even sessions count as not ahead, which is why short sessions show less than 50% even though the edge has barely had time to act.

Not present

What this tells you
Over a few hundred rounds, results are mostly luck. Almost half of sessions finish ahead. A good session doesn't mean you played well, and a bad one doesn't mean you played badly.
The edge wins over time. The expected loss grows with the number of rounds, but the swings grow only with its square root. By 10,000 rounds, the average loss is about 40 units and only 36% of sessions are ahead. That matches the normal approximation: 40.6 ÷ (1.15 × √10,000) ≈ 0.35 standard deviations, about 36%.
No system changes this. Raising and lowering your bet changes the size of the swings, not the edge on each coin you bet.
Treat blackjack as entertainment with a small price, not as a way to make money.

Blackjack variants: what each one changes
Many games are sold as blackjack with a twist. Most add something you like and take something back. Rules vary from one version to the next, so always read the rules panel of the exact game you play.
Variant What's different The catch
Classic (hole card) Dealer takes a hole card and peeks for blackjack with an Ace or 10 up None: this is the standard game on this page
European / no hole card Dealer takes the second card only after you play In many such games extra doubled or split bets are lost to a dealer blackjack too. Measured as all bets lost: +0.11 points
Spanish 21 All four 10s removed from each deck (Jacks, Queens and Kings stay) Removing 10s hurts you. Player-friendly rules such as player 21 always winning, late surrender and doubling on any number of cards make up for part or all of it
Free Bet Free doubles on two-card hard 9 to 11 and free splits of pairs except 10s A dealer total of 22 pushes the hands still in play. The dealer usually hits soft 17
Blackjack Switch You play two hands and may swap their second cards Blackjack pays 1 to 1 and a dealer 22 pushes
Double Exposure Both dealer cards are dealt face up Blackjack usually pays 1 to 1 and most ties go to the dealer
The standard chart is only right for the classic game and close relatives. Spanish 21, Free Bet, Switch and Double Exposure each need their own strategy. With no hole card, the standard chart is nearly right, but you should not double or split against a 10 or Ace as freely, because a dealer blackjack would take the extra bets.

RNG blackjack vs live-dealer blackjack
Online blackjack comes in two forms. The card rules are the same. The way the cards are dealt is not.
RNG (software) Live dealer
Who deals Software with a random number generator A real dealer with real cards, streamed
Shuffle Usually a fresh shuffle every round A shoe dealt down to a cut card, or a shuffling machine
Speed As fast as you click Rounds on a betting timer, slower
Rules Set by the game: read the info panel Set by the table: read the rule card
Card counting No use with a fresh shuffle each round Limited by early reshuffles and shuffling machines

Not present

What it means for you
The chart is the same. Basic strategy depends on the rules, not on whether a person or software deals. Use the chart for the posted rules.
Fresh shuffle every round. Most software games reshuffle the virtual deck for every round, so the cards from one round tell you nothing about the next. Our figures on this page assume exactly that.
Speed changes your cost. Your average loss is edge × total amount bet. A fast RNG game plays far more rounds per hour than a live table, so it costs more per hour at the same edge and bet size.
Rules differ by game. Two games with the same name at the same site can have different payouts, decks and soft 17 rules. Check before you play.

Not present

What to check before you play
The game's rules panel. Blackjack payout (3:2 or 6:5), number of decks, soft 17 rule, doubling and splitting limits, surrender. These set the house edge, exactly as in the table rules section above.
Playthrough. Sweeps Coins usually have to be played through before they can be redeemed. Check whether blackjack counts in full, in part or not at all toward it.
Redemption terms. Minimums, verification and methods are set by each site. See Sweeps Coin redemption methods .
Eligibility. Sweepstakes casinos are typically 18+ or 21+ and are not available in every state. Check the site's terms for your state before you sign up.
The house edge works the same with Sweeps Coins as with any other coin. Over many rounds you will usually end with fewer coins than you played. Basic strategy only slows that down.

A short history of blackjack
Blackjack grew out of a family of European "twenty-one" games. Card-game histories don't agree on every detail, so here is what the sources support.
When What happened Source
Written c. 1601–02, published 1613 Cervantes's story Rinconete y Cortadillo has two card cheats who play veintiuna (twenty-one) Cervantes, Novelas ejemplares
18th century Vingt-un or vingt-et-un is played in France Parlett, The Oxford Guide to Card Games
1800 First English printed rules, under the name vingt-un, in an edition of Hoyle Published card-game histories
1825 First American printed rules, a reprint of the English ones Published card-game histories
c. 1896–99 The name "blackjack" appears in North America Depaulis (2010)
1956 Baldwin, Cantey, Maisel and McDermott publish the first near-optimal basic strategy Journal of the American Statistical Association 51, 429–439
1961 Edward Thorp shows that card counting can give the player an edge Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 47, 110–112
1962 Thorp publishes Beat the Dealer Blaisdell

Not present

Where the name comes from
The popular story is that American casinos once paid a 10 to 1 bonus for an Ace of spades with a black Jack, and the name stuck after the bonus disappeared. It is repeated everywhere but no one has documented such a bonus. The card historian Thierry Depaulis traced the name instead to the 1890s and linked it to the Klondike gold rush (1896–99), possibly through "blackjack", a miners' name for a zinc ore. Treat the bonus story as legend.

Not present

What changed after Thorp
Once Thorp showed that tracking the cards could tip the odds in the player's favour, casinos made counting harder with earlier reshuffles and, later, shuffling machines. Software games went further and reshuffle every round. That is why counting has no use in most online blackjack.

Blackjack myths vs the maths
Myth What the maths says
"The goal is to get 21." The goal is to beat the dealer. Standing on 16 against a 6 is right even though you can't make 21.
"Bad players at the table ruin my odds." Their choices change which cards you get on a given hand, but they are just as likely to help as hurt. Your average result doesn't change.
"I'm due after a losing run." In a game that reshuffles every round, every round is new. There is no "due".
"Always take even money on a blackjack." Even money costs about 3.9% of your bet compared with declining.
"Never bust is a safe strategy." Standing on every hard 12 or more gives the house a 6.01% edge, worse than copying the dealer.
"The dealer is due to bust after a run of good hands." The dealer's bust rate depends on the upcard and the rule, not on earlier rounds.
"A betting system can beat it." Bet sizing changes the swings, not the edge per coin bet.
"Card counting is cheating." Keeping track of cards in your head is a legal skill, though casinos can refuse to deal to counters. It does nothing in a game that reshuffles every round.
"Insurance protects a good hand." Insurance is a separate bet that loses about 7% on average in 6 decks, whatever your hand.
The myth about other players is worth a closer look. If the player before you hits when the chart says stand, he might take the card that would have busted the dealer. He is just as likely to take the card that would have made the dealer 21. Over many hands, those cancel out.

Frequently asked questions

Not present

Is blackjack luck or skill?
Both. Each hand is luck, but your decisions set the long-run price. The same table costs 0.41% with basic strategy and 5.68% if you copy the dealer. Few casino table games reward skill as much, though basic strategy alone still leaves the house an edge.

Not present

What happens if the dealer and I both have 21?
It's a push and your bet comes back. The one exception is a natural blackjack, which beats any other 21. If you both have blackjack, it's a push.

Not present

How many decks are used?
Usually six or eight in a shoe, one or two in hand-held games, and in most software games a virtual shoe that is reshuffled every round. More decks raise the edge slightly: with the same rules, 8 decks add 0.03 points to the 6-deck edge and one deck takes off 0.54.

Not present

What is a soft 17?
A 17 that includes an Ace counted as 11, such as A+6. Whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17 is one of the most important rules: hitting adds about 0.22 points to the house edge.

Not present

How often do you get a blackjack?
About once every 21 hands: 4.75% of hands with 6 decks and 4.83% with one deck.

Not present

What is the house edge in blackjack?
About 0.41% with basic strategy in the standard 6-deck game with S17, DAS and 3:2, from our 800-million-round simulation. Bad rules push it up: 1.77% at 6:5 and 1.98% at 6:5 with H17. Bad play pushes it up much more.

Not present

Can you beat blackjack?
Not with basic strategy. It makes blackjack one of the cheapest casino games but still leaves the house an edge. Card counting can give a small edge in a dealt shoe game, but not in games that reshuffle every round, and casinos can stop counters from playing. Read our blackjack strategy guide for the details.

Not present

Can you play blackjack for free?
Yes. Many games have demo modes, and at sweepstakes casinos you can play with Gold Coins, which are free and have no cash value. It is a good way to learn the chart.

Not present

Should I take insurance?
No. With 6 decks and an Ace showing, the dealer has blackjack only 30.9% of the time, and insurance pays 2 to 1, so it loses 7.4% on average. Even money on your own blackjack is the same bet and costs about 3.9% of your main bet.

Not present

What does the dealer do on 16?
The dealer always hits 16 and always stands on hard 17. The only rule that varies is soft 17. The dealer never looks at your hand to decide.

Not present

Is Five Card Charlie a real rule?
Not in standard blackjack. A few variants and home games use it. If a table has it, the rules panel will say so.
How we got these numbers: the house edges for basic strategy, copying the dealer, never busting, no doubles or splits and always insuring, and the win, loss and push rates, come from our own blackjack simulator, run on 2026-10-26 with 800 million rounds per playing style (400 million for no doubles or splits), a fresh shuffle every round and the standard game: 6 decks, dealer stands on soft 17, double after split, resplit to 4, dealer peeks, 3:2. Our 0.41% base result agrees with our own finite-shoe calculation (0.40%) and with published figures for these rules. Rule effects come from the same 800-million-round runs used on our blackjack rules page. The value of each decision, the basic strategy chart, the dealer bust rates, blackjack frequency, insurance and even money come from exact card-removal calculations for 6 decks. Session results come from 2 million simulated flat-betting sessions per length. The roulette, craps and baccarat house edges are exact calculations from each game's payouts and probabilities. Historical dates come from the published sources listed for this page. See our methodology for how we test and calculate.

Explore blackjack strategy charts and learn when to hit, stand, double, split or surrender, with advice for different table rules.
The best blackjack strategy is basic strategy : a chart that gives the mathematically best move for every hand against every dealer upcard. Following it cuts the house edge to roughly 0.3% to 0.6% on a good 3:2 table, depending on the rules. Nothing else you can do online gets closer.

Blackjack strategy beyond the chart: table rules, bankroll and bet sizing, why betting systems fail, side bets, card counting online, live dealer, all simulated.
Blackjack strategy is more than the chart. Basic strategy tells you how to play each hand, and it's the biggest single thing you control: it takes the house edge from about 5.7% (copying the dealer) down to about 0.41% on a good 6-deck table. Everything else that people call "strategy" is about the choices around the hands: which table you sit at, how much you bet, which extra bets you skip, and what you can and can't expect over a session.
This guide covers all of those, with numbers. We ran 800 million simulated rounds per playing style and rule set, 2 million simulated sessions per betting system, and exact calculations for the common side bets. You'll see what table rules are worth, how big swings get, how often a session ends ahead, why no betting system changes the house edge, what card counting does in a dealt shoe and why it does nothing online, and how all of it fits sweepstakes play with Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins .

What strategy can't do
It doesn't remove the house edge. You still lose a little on average.
Betting systems (Martingale and the rest) don't change the edge at all. See betting systems .
Card counting needs a dealt shoe. Online RNG games reshuffle every hand, so it does nothing there ( counting online ).

Our opinion
Most players lose more to three or four habits ( insurance , standing on 12 vs 2-3, never doubling soft hands, playing 6:5 tables) than to the house edge itself. Fix those four and you've done most of the work.

Ten rules that get you most of the way
Never take insurance or even money.
Always split Aces and 8s.
Never split 10s or 5s.
Stand on hard 17 or more.
Hit hard 12-16 against a dealer 7 or higher (surrender 16 vs 9/10/A and 15 vs 10 if allowed).
Stand on hard 13-16 against a dealer 2-6.
Hit 12 against 2 and 3; stand against 4-6.
Double 11 against 2-10, and 10 against 2-9.
Always hit soft 17 or less, and double soft hands against 5 and 6 at minimum.
Stand on soft 19 and up; hit soft 18 against 9, 10 and Ace.
These rules are taken from the basic strategy chart for 4-8 decks, S17, DAS. The full chart adds the remaining edge cases.

Why the chart says what it says
The dealer's weakness. Our dealer-bust table shows the dealer busting 35-42% of the time from 2-6 and 17-26% from 7-A. Against a weak upcard you let the dealer take the risk. Against a strong one you must improve your own total.
Doubling is where you make money. Most hands lose slightly on average. Doubles on 10 and 11 against weak cards are some of the few spots where you're the favourite, so you put more money out there.
Splitting turns one bad hand into two better ones. 8,8 is 16, the worst total. Two hands starting from 8 lose less in total than one 16. Aces are split because two hands starting from 11 are each strong.
Surrender caps the worst losses. 16 vs 10 wins well under 25% whether you hit or stand; giving up half is better than playing on.

Gold Coin and Sweeps Coin tables use the same math, so the same chart applies. Read each table's rules panel first, since one site can run several rule sets. Strategy doesn't change redemption rules, playthrough or eligibility. See sweepstakes blackjack .

What blackjack strategy can and can't do
Strategy decides how much the game costs you on average. It doesn't decide whether you win tonight. Here is the same 6-deck table (dealer stands on soft 17, double after split allowed, blackjack pays 3:2) played five ways, 800 million rounds each (400 million for the no-doubles style):
How you play House edge (per 100 coins of starting bets)
Never bust: stand on every hard 12 or more, hit soft hands up to soft 17 6.01
Copy the dealer: hit to 17, never double or split 5.68
Basic strategy hit/stand plays only, no doubles or splits 2.34
Full basic strategy, but take insurance every time the dealer shows an Ace 0.68
Full basic strategy 0.41
Two popular "simple" styles are the most expensive. Copying the dealer sounds safe, because the dealer has the edge and you're playing the dealer's way. The catch is order: you act first, so when you both bust, you've already lost. If you play like the dealer you bust about as often as the dealer does, roughly 29% of hands, so the two of you both bust in something like 8 rounds in 100 (0.29 × 0.29), and you lose every one of them. The 3:2 blackjack bonus hands back only about 2.3 coins per 100 (a 4.5% blackjack rate × the extra half bet). That back-of-envelope sum lands near the simulated 5.68%.
Never busting is even worse, at 6.01%. You can't lose by busting, but you give up on every 12 to 16 against a strong dealer upcard, where standing only wins if the dealer busts. Behind a 10 the dealer busts about 23% of the time; behind an Ace about 17% (6 decks, S17, after the dealer has checked for blackjack).
What strategy can't do is make the number negative. At 0.41%, the house still keeps about 41 coins of every 10,000 you bet, on average. Variance (the short-term swings) is far bigger than that edge, so you'll have winning and losing sessions either way. The rest of this guide is about keeping the cost as low as the rules allow and understanding the swings.

Step 1: get basic strategy right
The playing chart is the one part of blackjack strategy with a large, dependable effect on what the game costs you over time. It comes in layers, and the image above shows what each layer is worth in our simulation:
Correct hitting and standing saves about 3.33 points (5.68% down to 2.34%). This is mostly knowing when to stand on 12 to 16 (dealer shows 2 to 6) and when to hit them (dealer shows 7 to Ace), plus hitting soft hands the dealer would stand on.
Doubling and splitting saves another 1.94 points (2.34% down to 0.41%). These are the hands where you get more money on the table when you're the favourite: 11 against most cards, 10 against 2 to 9, splitting Aces and 8s, and the soft doubles against 3 to 6.
Skipping insurance is worth 0.28 points on its own (0.68% with "always insure" versus 0.41%).
The exact chart, the reasoning behind every cell and worked hands are on our basic strategy guide . If you want the charts for a specific rule set (6 decks, double deck, single deck, with or without surrender, dealer hits or stands on soft 17) on one printable page, use the blackjack cheat sheet . This page doesn't repeat them. It assumes you play by the chart and asks what else matters.
Is anything beyond the chart worth learning for the cards themselves? Only a little. Basic strategy uses your total and the dealer's upcard. A "composition-dependent" strategy also looks at which cards make your total. In our 6-deck calculation, 16 against a 10 made of 10-6 is a hit (expected loss 53.47 coins per 100 bet versus 54.10 standing), while 16 made of 4-4-8 is a stand (53.99 versus 54.44 hitting). The difference is under one coin per 100 coins bet on a hand you see a few times an hour. Overall, that kind of refinement is worth a small fraction of a point, so get the standard chart perfect first.

Pick the table: rules matter more than any trick
Before you play a hand, the rules have already set your cost. Changing one rule from our standard table (each measured with 800 million rounds of correct basic strategy for that game):
Rule change Effect on house edge (points) Why
Blackjack pays 6:5 instead of 3:2 +1.36 You get a blackjack about 4.53% of rounds (dealer doesn't also have one). Each pays 0.3 bets less: 4.53 × 0.3 = 1.36. Our exact calculation agrees.
Dealer hits soft 17 (H17) +0.22 The dealer improves a soft 17 more often than busting it, so fewer dealer 17s you can beat.
No double after split +0.14 Fewer chances to double on 10 or 11 after splitting 2s, 3s, 6s, 7s, 8s or 9s.
8 decks instead of 6 +0.03 Each card removed changes the odds slightly less in a bigger shoe; a small effect.
Late surrender offered −0.07 You can give up half your bet on hands like 16 against 10, losing less than playing them out.
Our simulated rule effects match the published rule-variation tables to within a few hundredths of a point (see sources). Put the rules together and whole tables range a long way:
Table House edge
8 decks, S17, DAS, late surrender, 3:2 0.35%
6 decks, S17, DAS, 3:2 0.41%
6 decks, H17, DAS, 3:2 0.62%
6 decks, H17, DAS, late surrender, 3:2 0.54%
6 decks, H17, DAS, 6:5 1.98%
8 decks, H17, no DAS, 6:5 2.15%
The gap between the best and worst tables in this list, 1.8 points, is almost as big as the whole value of doubling and splitting. That's why table selection comes second only to the chart. What to check, in order of size:
Blackjack payout. 3:2 (a 10-coin bet gets 15 for a blackjack) versus 6:5 (12 coins). This is the one rule worth walking away for.
Soft 17. The table felt or rules screen says "dealer stands on soft 17" or "dealer hits soft 17". Use the matching chart.
Double after split, surrender, number of decks. Smaller effects, but they decide which chart you use.
Rules are explained one by one on our blackjack rules page , and the house edge guide covers how the percentage is measured.
A worked example: at 10 coins a hand and 100 hands, the expected cost at the 0.41% table is about 4.1 coins of the roughly 1,130 coins you'll bet (doubles and splits add about 13% to your starting bets). At the 8-deck, H17, no-DAS, 6:5 table it's about 21.5 coins per 1,000 coins of starting bets, more than five times as much, for the same cards and the same skill.

Variance: what one round can do
Here's a surprise for many players: with perfect basic strategy you lose more rounds than you win . In our 800-million-round simulation you won 43.4% of rounds, lost 47.9% and pushed 8.8%. The game is still close to even because the wins are bigger on average:
Blackjacks (4.5% of rounds) pay 1.5 bets, not 1.
Doubles (you double in 10.4% of rounds) and splits (2.8% of rounds) put more money out when you're the favourite. Wins of 2 bets happen in 5.9 rounds per 100; losses of 2 bets in 4.2.
Per 100 rounds with a 1-coin starting bet, the results looked like this:
Result of the round Times per 100 rounds
Lose 3 or more bets (splits and doubles going wrong) 0.26
Lose 2 bets 4.20
Lose 1 bet 43.41
Push 8.78
Win 1 bet 32.63
Blackjack, win 1.5 bets 4.53
Win 2 bets 5.86
Win 3 or more bets 0.33
Two numbers describe the swings. Your average stake per round is 1.13 starting bets, because doubles and splits add money. The standard deviation of one round is about 1.15 starting bets. That's nearly three hundred times the 0.41% edge, which is why short sessions are mostly luck. Over 100 rounds the typical swing is about 11.5 bets (1.15 × √100) either way, against an expected cost of about 0.4 bets.
What this means in practice: a losing streak isn't evidence the game is broken or that you played wrong, and a winning streak isn't a sign you've found something. Judge your play by the chart, not by the last hour's result.

How often a session finishes ahead
We simulated flat-betting sessions (the same 1-unit starting bet every round, perfect basic strategy) of different lengths, 2 million sessions each (400,000 for the 10,000-round case):
Rounds Finished ahead Middle 90% of results (units) Average result (units)
10 45.6% −6 to +6 −0.04
50 47.7% −13.5 to +13.5 −0.20
100 47.7% −19.5 to +18.5 −0.40
500 46.4% −44.5 to +40.5 −2.05
1,000 45.3% −64 to +56 −4.01
10,000 36.2% −229 to +149 −40.2
"Ahead" means strictly up. Short sessions often end exactly even, which is why 10 rounds shows only 45.6% ahead even though the average result is almost zero.
The pattern is the important part. Over a session of up to a few hundred rounds, you'll finish ahead a bit less than half the time. As rounds pile up, the small edge slowly wins over the swings: by 10,000 rounds only about a third of sessions are ahead, and the average result is about 40 units down, which is the 0.41% edge × 10,000 rounds × 1 unit, give or take the doubles and splits.
This is the honest answer to "what's the best strategy to win at blackjack": over a short session, nothing gets your chance of finishing ahead much above 47%, and over a long enough time, the house edge shows up. Basic strategy keeps the cost of that time as low as possible.

Bankroll and bet sizing
Your bankroll is the coins you've set aside for a session, and a unit is your base bet. Their ratio decides how likely you are to run out before you're done. We ran 1 million flat-betting sessions of up to 1,000 rounds for each bankroll, stopping a session if the coins ran out (doubles and splits were only allowed if the balance covered them):
Bankroll Ran out within 1,000 rounds
20 units 62.4%
50 units 20.1%
100 units 0.83%
200 units 0 in 1 million sessions
So with a 1,000-coin limit and 1,000 rounds in mind, a 50-coin base bet (20 units) runs out in most sessions, a 20-coin bet (50 units) in about one in five, and a 10-coin bet (100 units) rarely. That's the reasoning behind a simple rule of thumb: make your base bet 1/50 to 1/100 of what you're prepared to spend in the session. It doesn't change the house edge. It changes how long your coins last and how much of a session is played rather than spent waiting to be over.
Your average cost depends on how much you bet in total, not on the size of your bankroll. At 10 coins a hand and a 0.41% edge:
Pace Average cost per hour
60 rounds an hour about 2.5 coins
120 rounds an hour about 4.9 coins
250 rounds an hour about 10.2 coins
Those are averages, and a single hour moves much more than that: over 60 rounds at 10 coins, one standard deviation is about 89 coins (10 × 1.15 × √60). Pace varies a lot by game. Software blackjack can deal as fast as you click; live-dealer tables are much slower. Faster play doesn't change the edge per hand, but it multiplies the hourly cost.
Three bet-sizing points the numbers support:
Raising your bet to "win it back" doesn't change the edge. It only makes the next loss bigger. The next section shows this with systems built on exactly that idea.
Bet size doesn't affect the right play. The chart is the same for 1 coin or 1,000. If a hand feels too big to double, the bet was too big for the bankroll.
Set the limit before you start , in coins and in time, and stop when you hit either. The responsible gaming page has more tools for that.

Why betting systems don't change the house edge
A betting system changes how much you bet based on recent results. Each one rests on the idea that past rounds change future ones, and in blackjack software that reshuffles every round they don't. Even in a dealt shoe, whether you won the last hand says almost nothing about the next one. The cards don't know what you bet.
Every round has the same expected cost per coin bet, so any mix of bet sizes has the same expected cost per coin bet. A system can only change where the results land: many small wins and an occasional disaster, or the other way around.
We tested six systems on real simulated blackjack rounds: 200 rounds, a 100-unit bankroll, a 1-unit base bet, basic strategy, 2 million sessions each. A session stopped early if the bankroll fell below 1 unit, and the bet was capped at what was left.
System How it bets Finished ahead Went broke Average total bet Average result Lost per 100 bet
Flat betting 1 unit every round 47.3% 0% 200 −0.82 0.41
Paroli Double after a win, back to 1 after 3 wins or a loss 47.0% 0.05% 335 −1.31 0.39
1-3-2-6 1, 3, 2, 6 units through a 4-win run, back to 1 on a loss 46.8% 0.43% 388 −1.56 0.40
Fibonacci Next number in 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8… after a loss, back two steps after a win 61.2% 35.1% 453 −2.63 0.58
Martingale Double after every loss, back to 1 after a win 44.4% 52.4% 531 −3.82 0.72
D'Alembert +1 unit after a loss, −1 after a win 42.8% 53.3% 990 −4.75 0.48
What the table shows:
No system turned the average result positive. Every row is negative. The more a system bets in total, the more it loses in total.
"Up after wins" systems (Paroli, 1-3-2-6) cost about the same per coin bet as flat betting, 0.39 to 0.41 per 100, the same within simulation noise. They don't help or hurt the edge; they just make the session swingier.
"Up after losses" systems (Martingale, D'Alembert, Fibonacci) lost more per 100 coins bet: 0.48 to 0.72. That's not because the cards changed. It's because, near the bottom of a bankroll, they can't afford to double or split when the chart says to, so they play some hands worse than the chart. Flat bettors almost never hit that wall.
Fibonacci finished ahead most often (61%) and still lost on average, because its losing sessions (35% went broke) are far bigger than its winning ones. The median Fibonacci session was +35.5 units; the average was −2.6.
The house edge is per bet. No system turns a series of bets that each lose on average into a total that wins on average. The systems only rearrange the risk.

Martingale up close: many small wins, one big loss
Martingale is the system people ask about most, because it feels unbeatable: double after every loss, and the first win recovers everything plus one unit. Here's what really happens. We gave flat betting, Martingale and D'Alembert the same goal, start with 100 units and stop at +10 or when the bankroll runs out , and ran 2 million sessions of each:
Flat betting Martingale D'Alembert
Reached +10 87.5% 88.7% 88.9%
Went broke 12.5% 11.3% 11.1%
Average rounds played 846 21.5 25.7
Average total bet 846 76.8 124.7
Average result −3.39 −0.55 −0.64
Lost per 100 bet 0.40 0.72 0.52
Martingale reaches the goal in about 89 sessions out of 100. The other 11 or so lose essentially the whole 100 units. Per 100 sessions, the 11 or so losers give up about 1,120 units between them, and the 89 or so winners bring back a little less, about 1,065 (wins often overshoot +10 slightly, because a doubled bet or a blackjack can land above the goal). The net is a loss of about 55 units, or −0.55 a session.
Why it looks good on a small goal: it gets there in about 22 rounds, so the total amount bet (and therefore the total house edge paid) is small. Flat betting takes about 846 rounds to reach the same +10, bets about 11 times as much in total, and pays more edge in total. Per coin bet, though, Martingale is worse: 0.72 per 100 versus 0.40, because of the same affordability problem described above.
Why it can't be fixed with a bigger bankroll: the doubling grows fast. After 6 losses in a row you've lost 1 + 2 + 4 + 8 + 16 + 32 = 63 units and the next bet is 64. A 100-unit bankroll can't cover it. Ignoring pushes, the chance of losing any given decided round is about 52.5% (47.9 losses for every 91.2 decided rounds), so 7 losses in a row is about a 1.1% event (0.525⁷), which comes up about once every 90 tries. In our 200-round Martingale sessions, the bet reached 32 units or more in 97.7% of them, and 52.4% ended broke. Table maximums add another wall: once the doubled bet is above the limit, the system can't recover at all.
There's also a blackjack-specific problem. Martingale's "one win recovers everything" assumes even-money bets. In blackjack, a big doubled bet sometimes needs another double or a split to play correctly, which a near-empty bankroll can't fund. And a win doesn't always arrive cleanly: pushes freeze the sequence, and a 3:2 blackjack or a won double pays more than the system expects, while a lost double costs more.

Side bets and insurance
Side bets are optional extra wagers on your first cards, and they're where strategy gives the most away for the least thought. We calculated the common ones exactly, by counting every possible combination of cards:
Bet Paytable 6 decks 8 decks
Main game, basic strategy — 0.41% 0.43%
21+3 (your two cards + dealer upcard as a 3-card poker hand) Every winning hand pays 9:1 3.24% 2.74%
21+3 Suited trips 100, straight flush 40, trips 30, straight 10, flush 5 4.62% 3.70%
Perfect Pairs (your first two cards are a pair) Perfect 25, coloured 12, mixed 6 6.11% 4.10%
Perfect Pairs Perfect 30, coloured 10, mixed 5 5.79% 3.37%
Insurance (dealer shows an Ace) 2:1 7.4% —
Paytables vary between games, and the edge moves with them. Unlike the main game, there's no decision to make after you place a side bet, so there's no strategy that lowers its edge. The only strategy is whether to make it. Even the cheapest version here costs more than six times the main game per coin bet.
Insurance is a side bet too, offered when the dealer shows an Ace. It pays 2:1 if the dealer has a 10-value card underneath. In 6 decks, with only the Ace seen, 96 of the 311 unseen cards are 10s, 30.9%. Insurance needs 33.3% to break even, so it loses 7.4 coins per 100 bet (3 × 96/311 − 1). If your own hand has no 10s, the chance is slightly better for insurance, and it still loses about 6.8 per 100. "Even money" on a blackjack is the same bet in another form. In our simulation, insuring every time raised the overall house edge from 0.41% to 0.68%.
What about using side bets "to cover" a hand? A side bet doesn't change your main hand's odds. It's a separate wager with its own, higher edge, so adding it raises the cost of every round you add it to. The odds and maths page has more on why each bet is priced on its own.

Card counting: how it works and what it's worth
Card counting is the one method that can, in theory, shift the edge, and it only works in a game dealt from a shoe that isn't reshuffled after every round. Edward Thorp published the first practical counting methods in Beat the Dealer (1962). The idea: cards that have been dealt aren't coming back until the shuffle. A shoe with more 10s and Aces left favours the player (more blackjacks, better doubles, more dealer busts); a shoe rich in small cards favours the dealer.
The most common method, Hi-Lo , gives each card a value as it's dealt: 2 to 6 count +1, 7 to 9 count 0, and 10s and Aces count −1. The running total is the running count . Dividing it by the number of decks still to be dealt gives the true count , which measures how rich the remaining shoe is.
We simulated 800 million rounds from a 6-deck shoe dealt to 75% before the shuffle, playing flat bets and basic strategy (no changes to the chart by count), and recorded the result for each true count at the start of the round (rounded down):
True count Share of rounds Player result per 100 coins bet
−4 or lower 8.7% −2.96
−3 6.7% −1.64
−2 12.4% −1.11
−1 18.9% −0.63
0 26.6% −0.18
+1 11.8% +0.39
+2 6.5% +0.85
+3 3.7% +1.31
+4 2.1% +1.72
+5 1.2% +2.11
+6 or higher 1.4% +2.85
Each point of true count moved the result by about 0.4 to 0.46 points, close to the rule of thumb of about half a point per true count that's commonly quoted in the counting literature. But look at the share column: the count was +1 or more in only 26.6% of rounds, and +2 or more in 14.8%. Most of the time the shoe is neutral or bad.
A counter makes use of this by betting more when the count is high. With a 1-to-8 spread (1 unit at true count 0 or lower, 2 at +1, 4 at +2, 6 at +3, 8 at +4 or more), our simulated result was +0.40 coins per 100 coins of starting bets at 75% penetration . That's a small edge, with the swings of a game where your bets jump eightfold, and it assumes perfect counting, no mistakes, and a casino that tolerates the spread. At 50% penetration (the shoe shuffled halfway through), the same spread came out at +0.02 , effectively nothing, because high counts are rarer when half the cards are never reached. Counting in your head uses only cards everyone can see, but casinos can restrict bets, shuffle early or refuse play to suspected counters. We describe it here for understanding, not as a plan.

Why card counting doesn't work online
Most online blackjack, including the software tables at sweepstakes casinos, uses a random number generator (RNG) that in effect deals each round from a freshly shuffled set of decks. A continuous shuffling machine at a physical table does much the same, because used cards go back in before the shoe runs low. Either way, every round starts from a full set of cards, so the count is always 0 and there's nothing to track.
We ran the same 1-to-8 spread in a game reshuffled every round. The result: −0.41 per 100 , exactly the normal house edge, because the spread never had a high count to bet into. The three cases side by side:
Shuffle Rounds at true count +2 or more 1-to-8 spread result per 100
Hand-dealt shoe, 75% dealt 14.8% +0.40
Hand-dealt shoe, 50% dealt 8.8% +0.02
RNG game or reshuffle every round 0% −0.41
Two related myths:
"The RNG is due." A fresh shuffle every round has no memory. Ten losses in a row don't make a win more likely next hand.
"Counting the hand on screen helps." Using the cards you can see in the current round is what basic strategy already does through your total and the upcard. The composition tweaks it adds are worth a small fraction of a point.
Live-dealer games are the exception that's worth understanding, which is the next section.

Live-dealer blackjack: what changes and what doesn't
In live-dealer blackjack a real dealer deals real cards on camera. The chart is the same as for any game with the same rules. The differences are practical:
Read the rules panel. Live tables publish the number of decks, whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17, the blackjack payout, doubling and splitting rules, and whether surrender is offered. Many live tables use 8 decks; our calculations show 8 decks plays from the same chart as 6. Rules such as "double on 9 to 11 only" or "one split" change a few cells, so check the cheat sheet for the matching rule set.
Check the shuffle point. A live shoe is dealt by hand, but the casino decides where the cut card goes and can shuffle whenever it likes. As the previous sections show, counting needs deep penetration, and at 50% a spread was worth essentially nothing in our simulation. Treat a live game as a normal house-edge game.
Price side bets and "bet behind". Live tables often push side bets, which carry the 2.7% to 7.4% edges shown above. "Bet behind" lets you place a bet on another seated player's hand. You don't make the decisions, so your edge is whatever that player's play gives: about 0.41% if they follow the chart on our standard rules, more if they don't.
Mind the pace. Live tables deal far fewer rounds an hour than software games. That lowers the average cost per hour at the same bet. It doesn't change the cost per hand.
Don't let the decision timer rush you. Live tables give a fixed window to act. Have the chart open before your cards land, so the timer never makes the decision for you.
Shared-hand formats. Some live games deal one hand that every player at the table plays, each making their own decisions. The cards are the same for everyone, but the rules (and side-bet menus) often differ from a standard table, so read them before you assume the standard chart applies.

Blackjack strategy at sweepstakes casinos
At a sweepstakes casino you play with two kinds of coin. The blackjack maths is the same for both; what differs is what the coins are for.
Gold Coins are for fun play and have no cash value. You get them free (sign-up and daily bonuses), or you can buy a Gold Coin pack. They're the best place to practise the chart and try a betting idea without anything at stake.
Sweeps Coins are promotional coins, and no purchase is necessary to get them. Sites give them free through daily bonuses, social promotions and a mail-in request (often called AMOE, alternative method of entry); some also include them as a free bonus with a Gold Coin pack. Under each site's rules, Sweeps Coins won in play can be redeemed for prizes. Our guides explain how to get free Sweeps Coins , what Sweeps Coins are , how mail-in requests work and the usual redemption methods .
How strategy fits around the coins:
The house edge applies per coin bet, in both currencies. A 0.41% game costs about 0.41 Sweeps Coins per 100 bet on average, and a 6:5 game about 1.8. Table selection and skipping side bets matter as much here as anywhere.
Playthrough rules. Sites usually require Sweeps Coins to be played through before they can be redeemed, and they set which games count. Strategy can't change those rules. It only changes how much the playthrough costs on average. At 0.41%, playing 1,000 Sweeps Coins through blackjack costs about 4 Sweeps Coins on average, with swings far larger than that.
Check that blackjack counts and which variant you're playing. Each site sets its own game list, rules and terms. Read the game's info screen for the rules and the site's terms for playthrough and eligibility.
Age and location. Sweepstakes casinos set their own eligibility rules, typically 18+ or 21+, and aren't available everywhere. Only play where the site's terms say you're eligible.
None of this makes blackjack a way to earn money. Treat Sweeps Coins the same way as anything else you play with: set a limit you're happy to spend, in coins and time, before you start.

A blackjack session plan
Everything above comes down to a short routine.
Before you play
Pick a coin limit you're happy to spend, and a time limit too.
Open the rules screen. Skip 6:5 tables. Note soft 17, double after split and surrender, and open the matching chart from the cheat sheet .
Choose a base bet of 1/50 to 1/100 of your limit. In our simulation, 50 units ran out within 1,000 rounds about 20% of the time; 100 units under 1%.
While you play
Play every hand by the chart, including the uncomfortable ones (hitting 12 against a 2, splitting 8s against a 10).
Flat bets. Raising after losses doesn't change the edge; it makes the losses bigger.
Skip insurance, even money and side bets.
Stop when the time or the coins run out, whichever comes first.
After you play
Note any hands you had to look up, and practise them with Gold Coins.
Don't raise the next session's limit to win back the last one.
Take breaks. It's entertainment, and the results are a mix of a small edge and a lot of luck.

Blackjack strategy FAQ

Not present

What is the best blackjack strategy?
Basic strategy for the exact rules on your table, played on every hand, with no insurance or side bets, at a 3:2 table with the best rules you can find. On 6 decks with the dealer standing on soft 17 and double after split, that costs about 0.41% of what you bet. Copying the dealer costs about 5.7%.

Not present

Can any strategy guarantee a win at blackjack?
No. With perfect basic strategy the house keeps a small edge, and short sessions are dominated by luck: about 47% of 200-round flat-bet sessions finished ahead in our simulation, and fewer the longer you play.

Not present

Do betting systems like Martingale work?
They don't change the house edge. In our simulation, every system lost on average. Martingale went broke in 52% of 200-round sessions with a 100-unit bankroll, and lost 0.72 per 100 coins bet compared with 0.41 for flat betting.

Not present

What bankroll do I need for blackjack?
It depends on how long you want to play. For 1,000 flat-bet rounds, 50 base bets ran out about 20% of the time in our simulation and 100 base bets under 1%. A base bet of 1/50 to 1/100 of your session limit is a sensible range.

Not present

Should I take insurance or even money?
No, if you play basic strategy and don't count cards. Insurance loses about 7.4 coins per 100 bet on 6 decks (6.8 when your hand has no 10s), and even money is the same bet. Insuring every time raised the overall house edge from 0.41% to 0.68% in our simulation.

Not present

Are blackjack side bets worth it?
Not on price. The common paytables we calculated cost 2.7% to 6.1% per coin bet, compared with 0.41% for the main game. Play them only if the extra cost is worth it to you as entertainment.

Not present

Does card counting work in online blackjack?
Not in RNG blackjack. The cards are reshuffled every round, so the count never moves. Our 1-to-8 count spread lost the normal 0.41% there. In a hand-dealt shoe the same spread was worth +0.40 per 100 at 75% penetration and essentially nothing at 50%.

Not present

Does blackjack strategy work with Sweeps Coins?
Yes. The cards and the maths are the same for Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins. Strategy lowers the average cost of play, including playthrough, but it doesn't change a site's rules for redeeming Sweeps Coins or guarantee any result.

Not present

Should I play faster or slower?
The edge per hand is the same either way, but faster play multiplies the cost per hour. At 10 coins a hand, 60 rounds an hour costs about 2.5 coins on average and 250 rounds about 10.2.

Where do I find the charts?
On the basic strategy guide (with the reasoning) and the blackjack cheat sheet (one printable chart per rule set). More topics are on the blackjack guides hub .
How we got these numbers: playing styles, rule sets and the card-counting results come from our own blackjack simulator, 800 million rounds per case (400 million for basic strategy without doubles or splits), using the computed basic-strategy charts for each rule set. Our 6-deck S17 result of 0.41% agrees with our separate finite-shoe calculation (0.40%) and with published rule-variation figures. Betting-system and bankroll figures come from 400,000 to 2 million simulated sessions per case on real blackjack rounds, allowing doubles and splits only when the balance covers them. Side-bet edges are exact combinatorial calculations for the paytables shown. Insurance is exact card counting from the shoe. Card counting uses Hi-Lo with true count rounded down, flat basic strategy, no index plays and no casino countermeasures. See our methodology .

Learn blackjack rules, card values, payouts, doubling, splitting and surrender. See how dealer rules and table variations affect the game.
The core rules of blackjack are simple: beat the dealer's total without going over 21, with Aces worth 1 or 11 and face cards worth 10. The dealer must hit to 17, a natural 21 pays 3:2, and ties push. The table-specific rules listed below are what change your odds.

Complete blackjack rules: card values, order of play, payouts, dealer soft 17, doubling, splitting, surrender, insurance, decks and what each rule costs.
Blackjack has one goal: finish closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Number cards count their number, Jacks, Queens and Kings count 10, and an Ace counts 1 or 11. You play your hand first, the dealer then draws to 17 by a fixed rule, wins pay 1 to 1, a blackjack pays 3 to 2 and ties push.
That much is the same at every table. What changes from game to game are the table rules: how many decks, whether the dealer hits soft 17 , what a blackjack pays, when you can double, split or surrender , and whether the dealer peeks for blackjack. Those lines decide how much the game costs you. This page explains every standard rule with worked examples, settles the edge cases players argue about, and puts a number on each rule variation. We measured each one ourselves in an 800-million-round simulation.

Core rules (every table)
Cards: 2 to 10 at face value, J/Q/K = 10, Ace = 1 or 11 ( card values ).
You act first. If you bust, you lose even if the dealer busts afterwards.
The dealer has no choices. They hit until 17 or more ( dealer rules ).
Blackjack (Ace + 10-value card on the first two cards) beats any other 21.
Ties push. A dealer blackjack also pushes against your blackjack.

Player options
Option Usual rule Where it varies
Double down One extra card for double the bet, first two cards Some tables allow it only on 9-11 or 10-11
Split Pairs become two hands, matching bet Max hands (often 3 or 4), resplitting Aces, DAS
Surrender Give up half the bet, first decision only Late, early, or not offered
Insurance Side bet up to half your bet, pays 2:1 Always a bad bet without counting

No double after split about +0.14%
Double only on 10-11 about +0.2%
Late surrender offered about -0.07% to -0.08%
One deck instead of eight about -0.5%
Resplit Aces allowed about -0.08%

Edge cases players ask about
Split Aces normally get one card each, and a 10 on a split Ace counts as 21, not blackjack.
No-hole-card (European) games: if the dealer turns up blackjack after you split or double, many tables take all your extra money ( European blackjack ).
Five Card Charlie is not a standard rule ( explained here ).
Online RNG tables reshuffle every hand, so counting does nothing there.

Removed

The full rule sequence of a hand
Bets go in before any card is dealt and must sit within the table minimum and maximum.
Deal: two cards to each player, two to the dealer (one face down in hole-card games).
Insurance is offered when the dealer shows an Ace. It's a separate bet of up to half your stake that pays 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack.
Peek: with an Ace or 10 showing, the dealer checks for blackjack. A dealer natural ends the hand: everyone loses their original bet except players with their own blackjack (push).
Player naturals are paid right away if the dealer doesn't have one.
Player decisions , seat by seat.
Dealer play by the house rule (S17 or H17). The dealer does not draw at all if every player has busted or been paid.
Settlement: 1:1 for wins, stake back on pushes.

Rules that vary, explained
Dealer soft 17 (S17/H17). The single most common difference between "good" and "ordinary" tables. H17 adds about 0.2% to the edge and changes a few strategy cells: 11 vs A becomes a double, soft 18 vs 2 becomes a double, and 15 vs A becomes a surrender if late surrender is offered.
Number of decks. More decks slightly favour the house, mainly because blackjacks and good doubles become a bit less likely to come in clusters. Single-deck games often pay 6:5 to compensate, which more than cancels the benefit.
Doubling restrictions. "Double on any two cards" is standard. Some games restrict doubling to 9-11 or 10-11, which kills soft doubles.
Splitting rules.
How many hands: commonly up to 3 or 4.
Resplitting Aces (RSA): usually not allowed; it helps you slightly when it is.
Hitting split Aces: almost never allowed.
Double after split (DAS): helps you and makes splitting 2s, 3s, 4s and 6s right more often.
Surrender. Late surrender (after the dealer peeks) is the common form and helps slightly. Early surrender (before the peek) is rare and worth much more, about 0.6% in the player's favour per published tables, mostly against an Ace.
Hole card or not. American rules have the dealer peek; European no-hole-card rules don't, and usually let the dealer take extra money from doubles and splits when they turn up a natural. Some versions return the extra bets (a rule often called OBO, "original bets only"), which is equivalent to peeking.
Blackjack payout. 3:2 is standard; 6:5 and 1:1 exist and are bad for you.

Most RNG and live games have an "i", "Help" or "Rules" button. The lines to find are:
Panel says Meaning
"Blackjack pays 3 to 2" Standard payout
"Dealer stands on all 17s" S17
"Dealer must hit soft 17" H17
"Double on any two cards" / "Double on 9, 10, 11" Doubling rule
"Double after split allowed" DAS
"Surrender" or "Late surrender" Surrender offered
"Dealer peeks" / "No hole card" Peek rule
"Number of decks: 6/8" Deck count
"RTP 99.5%" etc. Theoretical return with optimal play
The published RTP assumes perfect strategy. Your real return is lower if you play by feel.

Every online and live-dealer blackjack game has a rules or info screen, usually behind an "i", "?" or "Help" button. It takes a minute to read, and it tells you more about the cost of the game than anything else. These are the lines to find and what they mean:
The panel says What it means Good or bad
"Blackjack pays 3 to 2" Standard payout Good
"Blackjack pays 6 to 5" Short payout Bad: +1.36 points
"Dealer stands on all 17s" / "Dealer stands on soft 17" S17 Good
"Dealer hits soft 17" / "Dealer must draw on soft 17" H17 Bad: +0.22 points
"Double on any two cards" No doubling limit Good

"Surrender" / "Late surrender" Late surrender Good: −0.07
"Dealer peeks for blackjack" Peek game Standard
"No hole card" + "all bets lost to dealer blackjack" ENHC Bad: +0.11
"Number of decks: 6" / "8" Deck count Small effect
"Theoretical RTP 99.59%" Return with best play Check what it assumes
Worked example. The panel in the image reads: blackjack pays 6 to 5, 8 decks shuffled every round, dealer hits soft 17, double on 9, 10 or 11 only, split once with no resplitting, dealer peeks. Add the effects to the 0.41% base: +1.36 (6:5), +0.03 (8 decks), +0.22 (H17), +0.10 (doubling limit), +0.06 (no resplit). That comes to about 2.17% . Our simulation of that exact table gave 2.16% . That's more than five times the cost of the standard game, and more than three-quarters of the extra comes from the 6:5 line.
About RTP figures. Some panels quote a return to player (RTP), which is 100% minus the house edge: our base game's 0.41% edge is an RTP of about 99.59%. RTP figures in game panels normally assume perfect strategy, so your return is lower if you play by feel. If a panel's RTP and its listed rules don't match the numbers on this page, the panel may assume different rules or a different strategy. Treat the rules list as the thing to check.
Shuffling. Our figures assume a fresh shuffle every round, as in online RNG games. In a shoe dealt down to a cut card, our earlier simulation put the basic-strategy edge only about 0.02 points higher, so the same numbers work for live-dealer and shoe games too.

Sweepstakes and social casino rules
The card rules are the same. Coin rules are extra: Gold Coins have no prize value; Sweeps Coins usually need playthrough before redemption, may have a redemption minimum, and are only available where the site accepts players from your state. Some sites exclude table games from bonus playthrough. See redemption rules and eligibility .

Blackjack rules at a glance
Here is the whole game in eight lines. Everything else on this page is detail, variations and edge cases built on them. If you've never played, what is blackjack explains the game's background and how to play blackjack walks you through your first hands.
You play against the dealer, not the other players. Each seat is its own contest with the dealer's hand. Other players' choices change which cards come out, but not your odds on average.
The target is 21. A hand closer to 21 than the dealer's wins. A hand over 21 is a bust and loses straight away.
Card values. 2 to 10 count their number, Jack, Queen and King count 10, and an Ace counts 1 or 11, whichever is better for the hand. Suits never matter.
Blackjack. An Ace plus any 10-value card as your first two cards is a blackjack (also called a natural). It beats every other hand, including a dealer 21 made with three or more cards, and pays 3 to 2 at a standard table.
You act first. You hit (take a card), stand, double, split or surrender before the dealer plays. If you bust, you lose even if the dealer busts later. This is the house's built-in advantage.
The dealer has no choices. The dealer draws until reaching 17 or more, then stops. The only variation is whether the dealer also hits a soft 17 (a 17 that counts an Ace as 11).
Payouts. A win pays 1 to 1, a blackjack 3 to 2, an insurance win 2 to 1, and a surrender returns half your bet.
Ties push. If you and the dealer finish on the same total, your bet comes back. The dealer does not win ties in standard blackjack.
With these rules and the best play for every hand ( basic strategy ), a standard 6-deck game has a house edge of about 0.41% . That means about 0.41 coins lost per 100 coins bet over the long run. The rest of this page shows how each rule moves that number.

Card values and how to count a hand
Counting a hand is just adding, with one twist: the Ace.
Card Value
2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Their number
10, Jack, Queen, King 10
Ace 1 or 11
Because there are four 10-value ranks, almost a third of the deck counts 10: 16 of every 52 cards, or 30.8%. That's why "assume the hole card is a 10" is a common shortcut, though it's wrong more often than right.
Soft and hard hands . A hand is soft when it holds an Ace that is currently counted as 11. It's hard when it has no Ace or every Ace has to count 1 to avoid busting.
A + 6 is soft 17. The Ace counts 11. If you draw a 10, the Ace drops to 1 and you have hard 17, not a bust.
A + 6 + 10 is hard 17. There's no way to count the Ace as 11 without going over 21.
A + A is soft 12. Only one Ace can ever count 11; two would make 22.
A + 5 + 5 is soft 21 , not blackjack, because it took three cards.
The practical point is that no single card can bust a soft hand . If you hit soft 17 and draw a 10, you're on hard 17, not out of the hand. That's why basic strategy hits and doubles soft hands that look high, like soft 17 and soft 18 against some dealer cards. A hard 17 is a different hand altogether: any card from 5 up busts it.
Blackjack versus 21. Only an Ace and a 10-value card as your first two cards make a blackjack. Three or more cards totalling 21 are just 21. So are an Ace and a 10 dealt to a split hand (see the edge cases below). In a 6-deck shoe you're dealt a blackjack on 4.75% of hands, about one in 21. With one deck it's 4.83%.

How a round of blackjack works, step by step
This is the order of play at a standard table where the dealer has a hole card and peeks for blackjack. Online RNG games and live-dealer games follow the same order, with buttons instead of hand signals.
Bet. Place your bet within the table minimum and maximum before any cards are dealt. Side bets, if offered, go in their own spots at the same time.
Deal. Each player gets two cards, normally face up in shoe games. The dealer gets one card face up (the upcard) and one face down (the hole card).
Insurance (only if the upcard is an Ace). The dealer offers insurance, a side bet of up to half your bet that pays 2 to 1 if the dealer has blackjack. If you hold a blackjack yourself, the offer is called even money . Both are covered in their own section below.
Peek. With an Ace or a 10-value card showing, the dealer checks the hole card. If it makes blackjack, the hand ends there. Everyone loses their original bet except players who also have blackjack, who push. Insurance bets are paid 2 to 1.
Player blackjacks are paid. If the dealer doesn't have blackjack, every player blackjack is paid 3 to 2 at once and that hand is over.
Your decisions. Going round the table, each player plays their hand until they stand, bust, double, or surrender.
Dealer plays. The dealer turns over the hole card and draws by the house rule: hit on 16 or less, stand on 17 or more, with the soft-17 rule deciding that one total. If every player has busted or surrendered, the dealer doesn't draw.
Settle. Hands closer to 21 than the dealer's win 1 to 1. If the dealer busts, every hand still standing wins. Ties push. Hands that lost or busted are collected.
The options you have at step 6, and when each one is allowed:
Option What it means When you can use it Standard rule
Hit Take another card Any time before you stand or bust Unlimited
Stand Take no more cards Any time —
Double down Double your bet, take exactly one card First two cards of a hand Any two cards; also after splitting at most tables
Split Turn a pair into two hands, adding a second equal bet First two cards are a pair Resplit up to 3 or 4 hands; split Aces get one card each
Surrender Give up half your bet and end the hand First decision only, before any other action Late surrender, where offered
Insurance Side bet of up to half your bet that the dealer has blackjack Dealer shows an Ace, before the peek Pays 2 to 1
A simple example. You bet 10 coins and get 9 and 2 (11). The dealer shows a 6. You double: your bet becomes 20 and you get one card, a 10, for 21. The dealer turns over a 10 (16), must hit, draws a 7 and busts with 23. You win 20 coins. Had you only hit, you'd have won 10 coins with the same cards.

Blackjack payouts: 3:2, 6:5 and 1:1
The blackjack payout is the most important rule at the table, and the easiest to check. Look for it printed on the felt, in the game's info panel, or in the game's name.
Blackjack pays Win on a 10-coin bet House edge (our simulation) Change vs 3:2
3 to 2 (standard) 15 coins 0.41% —
6 to 5 12 coins 1.77% +1.36 points
1 to 1 (even) 10 coins 2.67% +2.27 points
Our 800-million-round simulation, 6 decks, S17, DAS, resplit to 4, dealer peeks, basic strategy.
Why so much from one rule? You get a blackjack on 4.75% of hands. At 3:2 each one pays 1.5 bets; at 6:5 it pays 1.2, so you lose 0.3 bets each time. 4.75% × 0.3 is about 1.4 points. The exact figure is a little lower, 1.36, because a few of your blackjacks (about 1 in 22) meet a dealer blackjack and push, so only 4.53% of hands are paid as blackjacks: 4.53% × 0.3 = 1.36. That makes a 6:5 game more than four times as expensive as the standard game. On its own it costs more than all the other bad rules on this page put together, apart from the even rarer 1:1 payout.
Two practical checks:
"Blackjack pays 6 to 5" sometimes shows up on single-deck games to offset the deck advantage (see the decks section). A single-deck 6:5 game is still far worse than a 6-deck 3:2 game.
Payouts on odd bets. At 3:2 a 5-coin bet wins 7.5 coins. If a game can't pay fractions, check how it rounds; betting in even amounts avoids the question.

The dealer's rules: standing or hitting soft 17
The dealer follows a fixed rule with no choices: hit on 16 or less, stand on 17 or more. Tables differ on one total only, soft 17 , such as A + 6 or A + 3 + 3.
S17 ("dealer stands on all 17s") : the dealer stands on soft 17.
H17 ("dealer hits soft 17") : the dealer hits it.
Hitting soft 17 is good for the dealer because, as with your own soft hands, no single card can bust it. A soft 17 is a weak total (it only beats your 16 or less). Drawing turns it into 18 to 21 fairly often, and when it doesn't, the dealer often ends up on another 17 or busts. With a 6 showing, H17 cuts the dealer's chance of finishing on exactly 17 from 16.6% to 11.5%. It raises busts from 42.3% to 43.9%, but it also puts more 18s, 19s and 20s in front of you. Net effect, per our simulation:
Rule House edge Change
Dealer stands on soft 17 (S17) 0.41% —
Dealer hits soft 17 (H17) 0.62% +0.22 points
Effects are measured from unrounded results, so they can differ by 0.01 from the gap between the rounded edges.
How often the dealer busts depends on the upcard. These are the chances for a 6-deck game after the dealer has peeked and doesn't have blackjack:
Dealer upcard 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 A
Bust %, S17 35.4 37.4 39.6 41.8 42.3 26.2 24.4 22.9 23.0 16.7
Bust %, H17 35.7 37.7 39.9 42.0 43.9 26.2 24.4 22.9 23.0 20.1
Our finite-shoe calculation, 6 decks.
The rule only matters when the dealer can reach soft 17, so it changes nothing for a 7 to 10 upcard. It matters most for a 6 (6 + Ace is soft 17 at once) and an Ace. Across all hands, a dealer who plays every hand out busts 28.2% of the time under S17 and 28.6% under H17.
H17 also changes six cells of basic strategy for 6 decks. You double 11 against an Ace , double soft 18 (A,7) against a 2 , and double soft 19 (A,8) against a 6 . If late surrender is offered, you also surrender 15, 17 and 8,8 against an Ace . Our cheat sheet has separate charts for both rules.

Doubling down rules
Doubling down means doubling your bet on the first two cards of a hand in exchange for exactly one more card. You can't hit again after a double, and you can't double after hitting.
Doubling is the main way basic strategy gets more money on the table when you're the favourite, mostly 10 or 11 against a weaker dealer card, and soft hands like A,6 against a 3 to 6. That's why rules that limit it cost you:
Doubling rule House edge Change vs standard
Any first two cards, and after splitting (standard) 0.41% —
Any first two cards, but no double after split 0.54% +0.14 points
Hard 9, 10 or 11 only 0.50% +0.10 points
Hard 10 or 11 only 0.60% +0.19 points
Our simulations, 800 million rounds each, 6 decks, S17, 3:2. For the restricted games we used basic strategy with each barred double played as its fallback (hit or stand), which is how a player using the standard chart would adjust.
What you lose under each rule:
9 to 11 only takes away every soft double (A,2 to A,7 against weak dealer cards, and A,8 where H17 applies).
10 or 11 only also takes away 9 against a 3 to 6.
No double after split (no DAS) stops you doubling a hand you got by splitting. Splitting 2s, 3s, 4s and 6s then pays less, and basic strategy splits fewer of them: hit 2,2 and 3,3 against a 2 or 3, 4,4 against a 5 or 6, and 6,6 against a 2. Some live-dealer games don't allow DAS, so check the panel.
Doubling on soft hands. At a standard table you can double any two cards, soft hands included. Doubling A,7 against a 4 is allowed and correct. It looks odd only because you're doubling a "made" 18.

Splitting rules: pairs, resplits and split Aces
When your first two cards are a pair you can split them into two hands. You add a second bet equal to your first, and each card gets a new second card and is played as its own hand.
The standard rules and their variations:
Which cards count as a pair. Two cards of the same rank always do. Whether two different 10-value cards (such as a King and a Jack) count as a pair depends on the game. Basic strategy never splits 10s, so this rarely matters.
Resplitting. If a split hand gets another card of the same rank, many tables let you split again, usually up to 3 or 4 hands in total. If you can't, the new pair is just its total: 8,8 becomes a hard 16 and you play it that way.
Split Aces. At almost every table, each split Ace gets one card only , and an Ace and a 10 on a split hand count as 21, not blackjack. They pay 1 to 1. Rarer rules let you resplit Aces if you draw another Ace, or even hit split Aces .
Doubling after a split (DAS) is covered in the doubling section above.
What each rule is worth, measured from the standard game (resplit to 4 hands, Aces one card each, no resplitting Aces):
Splitting rule House edge Change
No resplitting (one split only) 0.47% +0.06 points
Resplit to 3 hands 0.42% +0.01 points
Resplit to 4 hands (standard) 0.41% —
Resplit Aces, up to 4 hands 0.35% −0.06 points
Hit split Aces 0.22% −0.18 points
Resplit and hit split Aces 0.18% −0.23 points
Our simulations, 800 million rounds each, 6 decks, S17, DAS, 3:2, basic strategy, with each rule run on the same cards as the base game so small effects are measured precisely.
Why are the Ace rules worth so much? Two Aces are the best starting cards in the game when you split them: each new hand starts on 11. Under the one-card rule you can't do anything with a weak card like a 5 (soft 16). If you could hit it, you'd turn many of those hands into winners.
Worked example. You bet 10 on 8,8 against a dealer 10. You split (20 coins in play), and draw a 3 on the first 8 for 11. With DAS you double that hand to 20 coins and draw a 9 for 20. The second 8 draws another 8; with resplitting allowed you split again, now 40 coins across three hands. Splitting 8s against a 10 is about losing less: 16 against a 10 is one of the worst hands in the game, and two hands starting on 8 lose less on average than one 16.

Surrender: late and early
Surrender lets you give up half your bet and end the hand right away. It's only allowed as your first decision, before you hit, double or split. There are two versions, and the difference between them is large.
Late surrender (the common version) comes after the dealer has checked for blackjack. If the dealer has blackjack, the hand is already over and you lose your full bet. Surrender is only on offer when the dealer doesn't have one. Basic strategy surrenders very few hands. In a 6-deck S17 game it's 16 against a 9, 10 or Ace, and 15 against a 10 . If you play these hands out, you lose more than half a bet on average, so giving up exactly half is the cheaper option.
Early surrender comes before the dealer checks. That means you can escape a dealer blackjack for half your bet, which is why it is worth so much more. It's rare today. Against an Ace, the dealer has blackjack 30.9% of the time. Our finite-shoe calculation gives the early-surrender plays for 6 decks, S17:
Dealer shows Surrender early with
Ace Hard 5, 6, 7; hard 12 to 17; 3,3; 6,6; 7,7; 8,8
10 Hard 14, 15, 16; 7,7; 8,8
Play everything else by the normal chart. Under that strategy you surrender about 10% of all hands, and the game swings:
Surrender rule House edge Change
None 0.41% —
Late surrender 0.34% −0.07 points
Early surrender against 10 and Ace 0.22% player edge −0.63 points
Our simulations, 800 million rounds each, 6 decks, S17, DAS, 3:2.
Surrendering hard 5 against an Ace looks strange. You can't bust a 5, but it starts so far behind a dealer Ace, and loses so often to a blackjack, that half a bet is the cheaper way out. The figure shows how valuable it is to get out of a hand before a dealer blackjack takes the whole bet.
Surrender rules to check: whether surrender is offered at all, whether it's late or early, and whether it applies against an Ace. Some games call it "late surrender" in the rules panel; others just show a surrender button.

Insurance and even money
When the dealer shows an Ace, you're offered insurance : a side bet of up to half your original bet that pays 2 to 1 if the dealer's hole card is a 10-value card. It's settled at the peek, separately from your hand.
The maths fits in one line. With an Ace showing in a 6-deck shoe, 311 cards are unseen and 96 of them are 10s, so the dealer has blackjack 30.9% of the time. A bet that pays 2 to 1 breaks even only if it wins one time in three (33.3%). It falls short, so on average:
(96 × 2 − 215 × 1) ÷ 311 = −7.4% of the insurance bet
10-coin insurance bet Chance Result
Dealer has blackjack 96 in 311 +20 coins
Dealer doesn't 215 in 311 −10 coins
Average −0.74 coins
The name is misleading. It doesn't protect your hand; it's a separate bet on the hole card. "Insuring a good hand" makes no difference to the maths. Your own cards do shift the odds a little: if you hold two non-10 cards, the 10s make up slightly more of what's left, and insurance loses about 6.8% instead of 7.4%. Still a losing bet. Our strategy guide shows what always insuring adds to the house edge in a full game.
Even money is the same bet offered when you hold a blackjack. Instead of risking a push, you're paid 1 to 1 straight away. Our finite-shoe calculation, 6 decks:
Take even money: you win exactly 1 bet.
Decline: you win 1.5 bets when the dealer doesn't have blackjack and push when they do. That's worth 1.039 bets on average.
So even money costs you about 3.9% of your bet every time you take it. It's mathematically the same as taking full insurance on your blackjack, which loses 7.8% of the insurance stake here, because your blackjack leaves fewer 10s for the dealer. Decline it unless you'd rather lock in the win, and know what that choice costs.

The dealer peek and no-hole-card games
In American-style blackjack the dealer peeks : with an Ace or 10 up, they check the hole card before anyone plays and end the hand at once if it's a blackjack. You can only ever lose your original bet to a dealer blackjack, because you never get the chance to double or split into one.
Some games, usually called European style, deal no hole card . The dealer takes their second card only after all players have finished. There are two versions, and the difference matters:
Original bets only (OBO). If the dealer turns up blackjack, you lose only your original bet; any extra money from doubling or splitting is returned. For the maths this is the same as a peek game, so the house edge is unchanged at 0.41% and you play the normal chart.
All bets lost (ENHC, short for European no hole card). A dealer blackjack takes your doubles and splits as well. This adds about 0.11 points to the house edge (0.51% in our simulation), even after you adjust your strategy.
The strategy changes for all-bets-lost games come from our finite-shoe calculation for 6 decks, S17. Each one avoids putting more money out against a card that might already make blackjack:
Hand Peek or OBO No hole card, all bets lost
11 vs 10 Double Hit
8,8 vs 10 Split Hit
8,8 vs A Split Hit
A,A vs A Split Hit
Every other cell stays as it is. A pair of 8s against a 10 is the clearest case. Splitting means two bets exposed to a dealer blackjack that comes 7.7% of the time, and that tips the balance to hitting 16. The rules panel will usually say "dealer peeks", "no hole card", or describe what happens to doubles and splits if the dealer has blackjack. If it says nothing, check a live hand: if the dealer has only one card while you play, it's a no-hole-card game.

Number of decks
Fewer decks are better for you, other rules being equal. We ran every deck count with the same rules (S17, double any two, DAS, resplit to 4, 3:2, reshuffle every round) and the right basic strategy for each:
Decks House edge Change vs 6 decks
1 0.13% player edge −0.54 points
2 0.20% −0.21 points
4 0.35% −0.06 points
6 0.41% —
8 0.43% +0.03 points
Our simulations, 800 million rounds each. 1- and 2-deck games use our own deck-specific charts; 4, 6 and 8 decks use the 6-deck chart, which our calculation showed is also correct for 8 decks.
Why decks matter, in plain terms. With fewer cards, every card you and the dealer hold changes what's left by more. A blackjack becomes slightly more likely: it needs an Ace and a 10, and taking one out makes the other relatively more common. That's 4.83% of hands with one deck against 4.75% with six. Doubles also improve a little: when you double 11 holding a 6 and a 5, those small cards are no longer in a single deck, so a 10 is a bit more likely.
That single-deck player edge is exactly why you rarely see this rule set. Single-deck games usually come with offsets: 6:5 blackjack (+1.36 points), H17, no DAS, or doubling on 10 and 11 only. Always add up the whole rules panel, not just the deck count. Online RNG games shuffle every round anyway, so deck count only affects the edge, not your ability to count cards.

Here is every variation from this page in one table, measured one change at a time from our base game (6 decks, S17, double any two, DAS, resplit to 4, split Aces one card, no surrender, dealer peeks, 3:2). A plus sign is worse for you, a minus sign better.

2 decks instead of 6 −0.21 0.20%
1 deck instead of 6 −0.54 0.13% player edge
Early surrender against 10 and Ace −0.63 0.22% player edge
Our simulations, 800 million rounds per rule set, basic strategy for each game. Statistical error is about ±0.01 points on most effects.
Effects add up, roughly. To size up a table, start at 0.41% and add the effect of each rule that differs. We checked this on two full tables. A 6-deck H17 game with 6:5, no DAS, no resplitting and doubling on 10 and 11 only adds up to 2.38%; simulated as one game it came out at 2.34%. The example in the next section adds up to 2.17% and simulated at 2.16%. Adding is accurate to a few hundredths of a point, which is plenty for choosing a table. Our house edge guide explains where the edge comes from and what it means over a session.
What matters most, in order: the blackjack payout, then soft 17, then doubling and splitting limits. Deck count matters less than most players think, unless it's one or two decks with no offsetting rules.

Edge cases and rulings
These are the situations players most often ask about. Each ruling is for standard rules with a dealer peek.
You bust, then the dealer busts. You lose. Your hand was settled the moment you went over 21. This is where the house edge comes from.
You have blackjack, the dealer has blackjack. Push. With an Ace up, this is when even money is offered.
You have blackjack, the dealer makes 21 with three or more cards. You win 3 to 2. A blackjack beats every other 21.
You have 21 with three cards, the dealer has blackjack. In a peek game this never gets played out: the dealer's blackjack ends the hand before you draw, and you lose only your original bet. In a no-hole-card game you can make 21 and still lose to the dealer's blackjack.
An Ace and a 10 after splitting. That's 21, not blackjack, and it pays 1 to 1. The same goes for a 10 split and dealt an Ace.
Ties. Any equal total pushes, whether 17 against 17 or 20 against 20. The dealer doesn't win ties in standard rules.
The dealer busts. Every hand still in play wins 1 to 1, whatever its total. A 12 you stood on wins as much as a 20.
Everyone busts or surrenders. The dealer doesn't draw. There's nothing left to play against.
Five or more cards. No bonus. A "five-card Charlie" (an automatic win for five cards without busting) isn't a standard rule.
Doubling after hitting, or surrendering after hitting. Not allowed. Both are first-decision options only (split hands get their own first decision for doubling where DAS applies).
Splitting unequal 10s. Depends on the table. Some allow K,J; some require two of the same rank.
Changing your bet mid-hand. Not allowed, except by doubling or splitting.
Rules that mean a different game. Some tables add rules like "dealer 22 pushes", "dealer wins ties", bonus payouts for certain 21s, or play without 10s in the deck. These aren't variations of standard blackjack; they're different games with their own maths and strategy, usually under their own names. None of the figures on this page apply to them. Read the rules panel and treat them as new games.

Blackjack rules at sweepstakes casinos
At a sweepstakes casino the card rules are the same as anywhere else: card values, the order of play, the dealer's rule and the payouts all work as described on this page. The game's own rules panel is still where you check the table rules. What's added is a second layer of rules about the coins you play with.
Gold Coins are for fun play and have no cash value. You get them free through sign-up and daily bonuses, or you can buy a Gold Coin pack. They're a good way to try a new game and read its rules panel before anything is at stake.
Sweeps Coins are promotional coins, and no purchase is necessary to get them. Sites give them free through daily bonuses, social promotions and a mail-in request (often called AMOE, alternative method of entry), and some include them as a free bonus with a Gold Coin pack. Under each site's rules, Sweeps Coins won in play can be redeemed for prizes. Our guides cover what Sweeps Coins are , what Gold Coins are , how to get free Sweeps Coins , mail-in requests and redemption methods .
Rules to check in the site's terms, beyond the table rules:
Playthrough. Sweeps Coins usually need to be played through before they can be redeemed. Check whether blackjack counts toward it and at what rate. The table's house edge decides the average cost of that playthrough: at 0.41%, playing 1,000 Sweeps Coins through costs about 4 on average; at a 6:5 table (1.77%) it's about 18.
Redemption terms. Sites set minimums, verification steps and processing times for prizes.
Eligibility. Sweepstakes casinos set their own age rules, typically 18+ or 21+, and aren't available in every state. Only play where the terms say you're eligible.
Game variants. A site may offer several blackjack games with different rules. Check the rules panel of each one, not just the first.
The house edge applies to every coin you bet, in either currency. Choosing a 3:2, S17 table and skipping bad rules lowers the average cost; it doesn't make blackjack a way to earn money. More guides are in our blackjack hub .

Blackjack rules FAQ

Not present

What are the basic rules of blackjack?
Get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Cards 2 to 10 count their number, face cards count 10 and Aces count 1 or 11. You play first; if you bust you lose. The dealer then draws to 17. Wins pay 1 to 1, a blackjack (Ace plus a 10-value card as your first two cards) pays 3 to 2, and ties push.

Not present

Does the dealer have to hit on 16?
Yes. The dealer must hit 16 or less and stand on 17 or more. The only variation is soft 17: at H17 tables the dealer hits it, at S17 tables the dealer stands. H17 adds about 0.22 points to the house edge.

Not present

Who wins if the player and dealer both have 21?
It's a push if both have 21 made the same way. A blackjack beats a multi-card 21, so your blackjack against a dealer's three-card 21 wins 3 to 2. A dealer blackjack beats your multi-card 21, although in a peek game the hand ends before you can draw to 21.

Not present

Is a split Ace and a 10 a blackjack?
No. After a split, an Ace and a 10 count as 21 and pay 1 to 1. Only the first two cards dealt to your original hand can make a blackjack.

Not present

What does 6:5 blackjack mean?
A blackjack pays 6 for every 5 you bet, so 12 on a 10-coin bet instead of 15. It adds about 1.36 points to the house edge, taking a standard 0.41% game to 1.77%. On its own it costs more than all the other bad rules on this page put together, apart from a 1:1 payout.

Not present

Should I take insurance or even money?
Not as a strategy. With an Ace showing in 6 decks, the dealer has blackjack 30.9% of the time, but insurance needs 33.3% to break even, so it loses about 7.4% of what you put on it. Even money costs about 3.9% of your bet compared with playing on.

Not present

What is the difference between late and early surrender?
Late surrender comes after the dealer checks for blackjack, so you can't use it to escape one. It takes about 0.07 points off the house edge. Early surrender comes before the check and is worth much more, about 0.63 points in our simulation, enough to give the player a small edge at otherwise standard 6-deck rules. Early surrender is rare.

Not present

Can you double after splitting?
At most tables, yes. The rule is called DAS (double after split). Without it, the house edge rises by about 0.14 points and basic strategy splits low pairs less often. Check the rules panel; live-dealer games sometimes don't allow it.

Not present

Do more decks make blackjack harder?
Slightly. With the same rules, 8 decks add 0.03 points to the 6-deck edge, while 2 decks take off 0.21 and one deck 0.54. Single-deck games usually come with worse rules that more than cancel that, such as 6:5 blackjack.

Not present

Are the rules different at sweepstakes casinos?
The card rules are the same. Each game has its own table rules in its info panel, and the site adds coin rules: Gold Coins are for fun play; Sweeps Coins are promotional coins with no purchase necessary and have playthrough and redemption terms. Eligibility, typically 18+ or 21+, depends on the site and your state.
How we got these numbers: every rule effect on this page comes from our own blackjack simulator, run on 2026-10-26 with 800 million rounds per rule set, a fresh shuffle every round, and basic strategy for each game. We measured each rule change on the same cards as the base game (common random numbers), so small effects are precise to about ±0.01 points. For restricted games we used the standard chart with barred plays replaced by their fallback. Our base result, a 0.41% house edge for 6 decks with S17, DAS and 3:2, agrees with our own finite-shoe calculation (0.40%). The soft-17, double-after-split, late-surrender and 8-deck effects come from the same 800-million-round runs used across our blackjack guides. Dealer bust rates, insurance and even money come from exact card-removal maths. So do the early-surrender and no-hole-card plays, computed for 6 decks with the dealer standing on soft 17. Our effects agree with published rule-variation tables to within about 0.05 points for most rules. The largest gaps are no resplitting (+0.06 here against about +0.10 published) and a single deck (−0.54 here, using a single-deck chart, against about −0.46 published). Basic strategy itself goes back to Baldwin, Cantey, Maisel and McDermott (Journal of the American Statistical Association, 1956).

The blackjack house edge is about 0.4%-0.6% with perfect basic strategy on a 3:2, 6-deck table, and 2%+ for typical hunch play. Rules move it more than anything else.

Blackjack House Edge: The Math, Every Rule Set and What It Means for Your Session
Blackjack house edge explained with exact math and 51 billion simulated rounds: 0.41% on a good 6-deck 3:2 table, every common rule set from −0.16% to 2.16%, variance, session swings and bankroll risk.
The blackjack house edge is the average share of each starting bet the game keeps over the long run. On a good table (6 decks, dealer stands on soft 17 , double after split , blackjack pays 3:2) it is 0.41% with perfect basic strategy. That's 41 coins per 10,000 coins of starting bets, on average, and an RTP of 99.59%.
That one number hides a lot. It changes with the rules, from a small player edge on the best single-deck game we tested to more than 2% on a bad 6:5 shoe. It tells you almost nothing about a single session, because blackjack's swings are about 280 times bigger per round than the edge. This page works through the math behind the number: how it's calculated, how precise it is, what every common rule set costs, and how long it takes before the edge, rather than luck, decides your result.

House edge by rules (basic strategy, approximate)
Table Edge
6 decks, S17, DAS, late surrender , 3:2 ~0.35-0.45%
6 decks, H17, DAS, 3:2 ~0.6-0.65%
8 decks, H17, no DAS, 3:2 ~0.8%
Any of the above at 6:5 add ~1.4%
1 deck, H17, 3:2 ~0.15-0.2%

What "0.5%" means for you
On average you lose about 0.5 coins per 100 bet, measured on total wagered, not on your bankroll . Play 100 hands at 10 coins and you've wagered 1,000, so the average loss is about 5. Single sessions swing far more than that (see variance ).

Edge cases
RTP figures published by live providers (e.g. Infinite 99.47%) assume optimal strategy.
Sweepstakes play uses the same math. GC and SC don't change the edge.

Where the house edge comes from
The player acts first. If you bust, you lose, even when the dealer would have busted too. That double-bust is worth roughly 8% to the house in a game where you mirrored the dealer. The player gets most of it back through:
the 3:2 blackjack payout,
doubling and splitting,
standing on stiff hands against weak upcards,
surrender, where offered.
Basic strategy is simply the set of decisions that recovers as much of that gap as possible.

Worked example: rate a table
A live game: 8 decks, H17, DAS, late surrender, 3:2.
Start 0.45% + 0.02% (8 decks) + 0.2% (H17) − 0.08% (surrender) ≈ 0.6% .
An RNG game: 6 decks, S17, no DAS, no surrender, 6:5.
Start 0.45% + 0.14% (no DAS) + 1.4% (6:5) ≈ 2.0% . More than three times worse, mostly from one line on the table.

House edge is the average loss as a share of each bet: 0.5% means 0.50 per 100 wagered.
RTP is 100% minus the edge: 99.5%. Providers publish RTP assuming optimal strategy. See RTP .
Hold is what a casino keeps as a share of chips bought, which is much higher than the edge because players recycle the same money many times.

Three numbers get mixed up all the time. They measure different things.
Term Definition Blackjack, base rules What it tells you
House edge Average loss ÷ starting bet 0.41% Cost per round, in starting bets
RTP (return to player) 100% − house edge 99.59% Average return per coin bet, over the long run
Element of risk Average loss ÷ total coins wagered (including doubles and splits) 0.36% Cost per coin that actually went on the table
Hold Coins kept by the game ÷ coins the player brought Anywhere from 0% to 100% What happened to your balance, which depends on how long you kept replaying it
The first three are fixed by the rules and your play. Hold is not. It depends on how many times you recycle your balance.
Worked example. Start with 100 coins, bet 1 coin a round, and keep playing until the balance is gone. In our simulation of 20,000 such sessions, the balance lasted 24,600 rounds on average. That matches the math: when you play until ruin, expected rounds = bankroll ÷ edge per round = 100 ÷ 0.004062 ≈ 24,600. Over those rounds you'd bet about 24,600 coins in starting bets, close to 28,000 coins including doubles and splits. The game "kept" 0.41% of each starting bet, but because you kept replaying the same 100 coins, the hold on your balance was 100%.
That's why a 99.59% RTP doesn't mean you'll leave with 99.59% of what you started with. RTP is a return per coin bet. Every coin can be bet many times.

Edge vs session swings
The edge is small next to the standard deviation of about 1.15 units per hand. Over 100 hands at 10 coins, the expected loss is around 5 coins, but one standard deviation is roughly 115 coins. So any single session is mostly luck; the edge shows up over thousands of hands.

What house edge means: a long-run average, not a fee per session
The house edge is an expected value : the average result per starting bet if you could play the same game forever. Formally, if X is your net result on one round in starting bets, the house edge is −E[X]. With our base rules, E[X] = −0.0041, so you lose 0.41% of a starting bet per round on average.
"On average" is doing all the work in that sentence. No single round ever costs 0.41%. Almost every round ends in one of a handful of results: you lose your bet (43.4% of rounds), win even money (32.6%), push (8.8%), win a doubled bet (5.9%), lose a doubled bet (4.2%), or get paid 3:2 on a blackjack (4.5%). The 0.41% is what's left when you weight each of those results by how often it happens and add them up.
What makes the average meaningful is the law of large numbers . As the number of rounds grows, your average result per round settles towards −0.41%. It doesn't happen by the game "correcting" earlier luck. Earlier results are simply diluted by more and more new rounds.
Our simulations show the convergence directly. Here is the middle 90% of results per 100 coins bet (one-coin flat bets, base rules):
Rounds played Average result per 100 coins bet Middle 90% of sessions, per 100 coins bet
100 −0.40 −19.5 to +18.5
1,000 −0.40 −6.4 to +5.6
10,000 −0.40 −2.29 to +1.49
100,000 −0.40 −0.99 to +0.20
The average barely moves: it's −0.40 to −0.41 per 100 at every length, within simulation noise. The spread around it is what shrinks, roughly with the square root of the number of rounds. Ten times more rounds makes the range about 3.2 times narrower.
Three practical consequences follow:
The edge is charged on what you bet, not on what you bring. Playing 1,000 one-coin rounds costs about 4 coins on average whether you started with 50 coins or 5,000.
It applies per round, so speed matters. At 100 rounds an hour, the expected cost is 0.41 starting bets an hour. At 500 rounds an hour on a fast online table, it's 2.0. Same edge, five times the expected cost per hour.
It's a property of the game and your decisions, not of you. A lucky night doesn't lower it and an unlucky one doesn't raise it.

House edge per initial bet vs per total coins wagered
Blackjack is unusual because your stake can grow during a round. You double, you split, and sometimes you split again. So "per coin bet" has two possible meanings.
Per initial bet (the standard house edge). Divide the average loss by the starting bet only. This is the figure quoted almost everywhere, and the one on this page unless we say otherwise.
Per total coins wagered (element of risk). Divide the average loss by everything you put on the table, doubles and splits included.
In our base-rules simulation, the average round puts 1.1316 starting bets on the table. Doubles and splits add 13.2% more coins. The edge per total coins wagered is therefore 0.406% ÷ 1.1316 = 0.36% .
Why is it lower? Because the extra coins go in when you have the advantage. You double 11 against a 6, not 12 against a 10. Basic strategy only adds money when doing so improves your expected result, and most of those spots are ones where you're the favourite. So those extra coins carry a better return than the starting bet, and spreading the same loss over more coins lowers the rate.
Rule set Edge per starting bet Coins wagered per round Edge per coin wagered
6 decks, S17, DAS, 3:2 (base) 0.41% 1.132 0.36%
Same with late surrender 0.34% 1.132 0.30%
Same without DAS 0.55% 1.120 0.49%
6 decks, H17, DAS, 3:2 0.62% 1.136 0.54%
6 decks, S17, DAS, 6:5 1.77% 1.132 1.56%
1 deck, S17, DAS, 3:2 0.13% player edge 1.137 0.11% player edge
Which one should you use? For comparing tables, either, as long as you compare like with like. For estimating your cost, the standard per-starting-bet figure is easier: expected loss = edge × number of rounds × starting bet. You don't need to track how often you doubled.

How the house edge is calculated: the exact math
There are two ways to get a blackjack house edge: combinatorial analysis (exact calculation) and simulation . The first was done by hand in 1956 by Baldwin, Cantey, Maisel and McDermott, the four Army engineers who first published basic strategy. Their estimate put the game within about 1% of even. Modern computer analysis does the same thing card by card.
The exact method works like this:
Fix the rules and the strategy. Every number on this page is for basic strategy, a fixed decision for each hand total against each dealer upcard. See our basic strategy guide .
For each starting situation, work out the probabilities. Your two cards and the dealer's upcard fix what's left in the shoe. From there, compute the probability of each dealer final total (17, 18, 19, 20, 21 or bust), and the probability of each of your results for every action.
Take the expected value of the chosen action. EV = Σ probability × payout, over every possible ending.
Weight by the chance of each starting situation and add up.
Our exact finite-shoe calculation for 6 decks gives an expected value of −0.4019% for S17 and −0.6147% for H17. Simulation of the same rules gives −0.406% and −0.618%. They agree to within about one standard error of the simulation.
Some of the pieces are simple enough to do by hand, and they show how a rule turns into a number.
Worked example 1: the blackjack payout. In a 6-deck shoe (312 cards, 24 Aces, 96 ten-value cards), the chance of being dealt a blackjack is 2 × 24/312 × 96/311 = 4.749% . You only get paid if the dealer doesn't also have one. Given your Ace and 10, the dealer's chance of a blackjack is 2 × 23/310 × 95/309 = 4.56%. So a paid blackjack happens on 4.749% × (1 − 0.0456) = 4.532% of rounds. A 6:5 payout pays 0.3 of a bet less than 3:2 each time, so it costs 0.3 × 4.532% = 1.36 points of house edge. Our simulation measures the 6:5 penalty at 1.360 points. A 1:1 payout costs 0.5 × 4.532% = 2.27 points.
Worked example 2: insurance. The dealer shows an Ace and you hold two non-ten cards. Of the 311 unseen cards (ignoring yours for simplicity), 96 are tens. Insurance pays 2:1, so per coin insured: EV = 2 × 96/311 − 1 × 215/311 = −23/311 = −7.4% . Count your own two non-ten cards as seen and it's −21/309 = −6.8%. Insurance is a separate side bet, and it's always a poor one for a basic-strategy player.
Worked example 3: even money. You hold a blackjack, the dealer shows an Ace. Taking even money pays 1 bet for sure. Declining pays 1.5 bets unless the dealer has a ten underneath: 95 tens among 309 unseen cards. Expected value of declining = 1.5 × (1 − 95/309) = 1.039 bets. Even money costs you 3.9% of the bet each time you take it.
Worked example 4: where the net comes from. Our exact calculation splits the base-rules EV into pieces:
Piece Contribution to EV, % of starting bet
Your blackjacks, paid 3:2 (4.532% of rounds × 1.5) +6.80
Dealer blackjacks against your non-blackjack (4.532% of rounds × −1) −4.53
Every other round, played out with basic strategy −2.67
Total −0.40
The blackjack bonus alone is worth +2.27 points. You give it all back, and more, in the played-out hands. The main reason is order of play: you act first, so when you both would bust, you've already lost. Doubling, splitting and standing on stiff hands at the right time claw back most, but not all, of that disadvantage. Our what is blackjack page covers the double-bust effect in more detail.

The edge by dealer upcard
The exact calculation also tells you where the edge is won and lost. Here is your average result per starting bet against each dealer upcard, with base rules and basic strategy:
Dealer upcard Chance Your average result per 100 coins bet Contribution to overall EV
2 7.7% +9.3 +0.71
3 7.7% +12.6 +0.97
4 7.7% +16.3 +1.25
5 7.7% +20.3 +1.56
6 7.7% +23.6 +1.81
7 7.7% +14.5 +1.11
8 7.7% +5.8 +0.44
9 7.7% −4.1 −0.32
10, J, Q, K 30.8% −17.3 −5.33
Ace 7.7% −34.1 −2.63
All 100% −0.40 −0.40
These figures include the rounds where the dealer has blackjack, so the Ace and ten rows carry the dealer's naturals.
Two things stand out. First, you're a big favourite against 2 through 8. Against a 6 you win 23.6 coins per 100 bet on average, because the dealer busts 42% of the time and you can double and split freely. Second, the ten-value upcard does most of the damage. It shows up on almost a third of rounds and costs 17.3 per 100 each time. That single row, at −5.33 points, outweighs the whole advantage against 2 through 6 (+6.31).
The H17 rule only changes the rows where the dealer can end up with soft 17, which means the Ace and the small upcards. In our exact calculation H17 makes the Ace row worse by 0.24 points and the 6 row better by 0.02. Overall it costs 0.21 points exactly, 0.22 in simulation.

How simulation measures it, and how precise it is
Most rule sets are easier to simulate than to solve: deal billions of rounds, play each with the strategy, and average the results. The catch is noise. A simulation gives an estimate with a margin of error, and the margin shrinks slowly.
The standard error of the estimated edge is SD ÷ √n, where SD is the standard deviation of one round (1.154 starting bets) and n is the number of rounds:
Rounds simulated Standard error 95% margin of error
1 million 0.115 points ±0.23 points
100 million 0.0115 points ±0.023 points
800 million 0.0041 points ±0.008 points
With a million rounds, you can't even tell a good 3:2 game (0.41%) from one with H17 (0.62%) with confidence. With 800 million rounds per rule set, which is what we ran, the margin is under one hundredth of a point.
We also used common random numbers : every rule set was dealt from the same eight seeded card streams. Rule sets that differ by one rule then see mostly the same cards, so the difference between them is measured far more precisely than either edge on its own. That's why our rule deltas are stable to the second decimal even when they're small, like +0.03 points for 8 decks instead of 6.
Finally, we checked the simulator against exact results. For the base rules: exact 0.402%, simulated 0.406%. For H17: exact 0.615%, simulated 0.618%. For the 6:5 penalty: exact 1.360 points, simulated 1.360. For the paid-blackjack rate: exact 4.532%, simulated 4.53%. When numbers from two independent methods match like this, both are probably right.

All 64 rule sets assume double on any two cards, resplit to 4 hands, no resplitting or hitting split Aces, and a dealer who peeks for blackjack. The 95% margin on each figure is ±0.008 points.
How to read it:
The payout is the biggest single rule. Every 6:5 game in the table is worse than every 3:2 game. The best 6:5 game (1 deck, S17, DAS, late surrender: 1.24%) still costs three times as much as an ordinary 6-deck 3:2 shoe.
Decks matter less than people think, once you're past two. Going from 6 decks to 8 adds only 0.01 to 0.04 points. Going from 6 to 1 takes off about 0.5.
H17 adds about 0.2 points , whatever the deck count. No DAS adds about 0.14. Late surrender saves 0.02 to 0.10 points: least in single deck, most in 6 and 8 decks with H17.
Rules interact a little. The surrender saving grows with H17 and with more decks, and the H17 cost is smaller in single deck (0.17) than in 6 or 8 decks (0.21). That's why you can't always just add the single-rule deltas, though the error from adding them is usually a couple of hundredths of a point.
For what each of these rules means at the table, see our blackjack rules guide . It has a full section on each rule.

Which rules move the house edge most
If you can only check a few things before you sit down, check them in this order. Each figure is the change from our base rules, measured with common random numbers:
Rule change from base Change in house edge Base becomes
Blackjack pays 1:1 +2.27 points 2.68%
Blackjack pays 6:5 +1.36 points 1.77%
Dealer hits soft 17 +0.22 points 0.62%
Double on 10 and 11 only +0.19 points 0.59%
No double after split +0.14 points 0.55%
No hole card (dealer doesn't peek, you lose doubles and splits to a blackjack) +0.11 points 0.52%
Double on 9, 10 and 11 only +0.10 points 0.51%
No resplitting +0.06 points 0.47%
8 decks instead of 6 +0.03 points 0.43%
Late surrender −0.07 points 0.34%
2 decks instead of 6 −0.21 points 0.20%
1 deck instead of 6 −0.54 points 0.13% player edge
Early surrender −0.63 points 0.22% player edge
A worked example of reading a rules panel. Suppose a table says: 8 decks, dealer hits soft 17, double after split allowed, late surrender, blackjack pays 3:2. Start from the 8-deck S17 DAS figure, 0.43%. Add H17 (+0.21 in 8 decks) and subtract late surrender (−0.09 with H17): about 0.56%. The lookup table gives 0.56% for exactly this game. Now change the payout to 6:5 and it's 1.91%. One line in the rules turned a 0.56% game into a 1.91% one: more than three times the cost per round.

Playing style and other games, briefly
Everything above assumes perfect basic strategy. The edge depends at least as much on how you play as on the rules. Our earlier simulations (same base rules, 800 million rounds each) give:
How you play House edge
Perfect basic strategy 0.41%
Basic strategy, but always taking insurance 0.68%
Never double or split 2.34%
Copy the dealer (hit to 17, never double or split) 5.68%
Never risk busting (stand on 12 or more) 6.01%
And for context, the house edge on some other common bets: baccarat Banker 1.06%, baccarat Player 1.24%, craps Pass Line 1.41%, single-zero roulette 2.70%, double-zero roulette 5.26%. With basic strategy and good rules, blackjack is one of the lowest-edge games you can play. Played badly, it's worse than roulette.
We go through each style, and why the dealer's rules beat a player who copies them, on our what is blackjack page. The full strategy and its exceptions are in our blackjack strategy guide and the printable cheat sheet .

Variance and standard deviation: the size of the swings
The house edge is the average result. Variance measures how far single results scatter around it. Standard deviation (SD) is the square root of the variance, in the same units as the bet, so it's the easier one to think in.
For our base rules, the per-round outcome distribution is:
Result of one round, in starting bets How often
−3 or worse (lost a split or a double after split) 0.26%
−2 (lost a double, or both hands of a split) 4.20%
−1 43.41%
0 (push) 8.78%
+1 32.64%
+1.5 (blackjack paid 3:2) 4.53%
+2 5.86%
+3 or better 0.33%
The mean of that distribution is −0.0041 and the variance is 1.332. The SD is √1.332 = 1.154 starting bets per round , the same as our simulator measures directly. It's a little over 1 because doubles and splits sometimes put 2 or more bets at stake.
Two rules of variance make SD useful:
Variance adds up across independent rounds; SD grows with the square root. Over n rounds, the SD of your total result is 1.154 × √n starting bets. For 100 rounds that's 11.5 bets, for 10,000 rounds 115 bets.
The expected loss grows in a straight line. Over n rounds it's 0.0041 × n starting bets. For 100 rounds 0.41 bets, for 10,000 rounds 41 bets.
So after 100 rounds, the swing (11.5 bets) is 28 times the expected loss (0.41 bets). After 10,000 rounds, the swing is still 2.8 times bigger. That ratio is the real reason blackjack feels nothing like a 0.41% game in the short run.
Rules change SD a little. In our 64 rule sets it ranges from 1.10 to 1.16. 6:5 lowers it slightly (1.138 for 6 decks S17) because blackjacks pay less. Late surrender lowers it because you swap some full losses for half losses. No DAS lowers it because fewer big hands get played. None of these changes is big enough to matter for your session. The edge changes are what matter.

How many hands until the edge shows
When does the house edge become a bigger factor than luck? A clean way to put it: when does the expected loss reach one standard deviation of the result? Set 0.0041n = 1.154√n and solve:
n = (SD ÷ edge)² = (1.154 ÷ 0.004062)² ≈ 80,700 rounds
Beyond that point the edge dominates. Before it, luck does. You can use the same formula with other multiples of the SD to see how the chance of being ahead shrinks (normal approximation, base rules):
Chance of being ahead Rounds needed At 100 rounds an hour
About 25% 36,700 367 hours
About 16% (expected loss = 1 SD) 80,700 807 hours
About 10% 132,500 1,325 hours
About 5% 218,300 2,183 hours
Because the edge sits on the bottom of the fraction, worse rules shorten this a lot. On a 6:5 shoe (edge 1.77%, SD 1.138), the same point comes after only (1.138 ÷ 0.01766)² ≈ 4,150 rounds . That's about 20 times sooner. In our simulations, the share of 10,000-round sessions finishing ahead drops from 36.2% on a 3:2 game to 6.0% on 6:5.
This is also why the house edge works for the game's operator and not for any single player. The game sees millions of rounds a day, far past 80,700. You see a few hundred.

Why short sessions swing so much
Here is the chance of finishing ahead after a session of flat one-coin bets, from our simulations, next to the normal-approximation estimate:
Session length Finished ahead (3:2, base rules) Normal approximation Finished ahead (6:5) Expected result (3:2) Middle 90% of results (3:2)
10 rounds 45.6% 49.6% not run −0.04 −6 to +6
50 rounds 47.7% 49.0% not run −0.2 −13.5 to +13.5
100 rounds 47.7% 48.6% 44.0% −0.4 −19.5 to +18.5
500 rounds 46.4% 46.9% not run −2.0 −44.5 to +40.5
1,000 rounds 45.3% 45.6% 31.3% −4.0 −64 to +56
10,000 rounds 36.2% 36.2% 6.0% −40 −229 to +149
100,000 rounds 13.7% 13.3% not run −401 −990 to +197
Each 3:2 row is 2 million sessions, except 10,000 rounds (400,000 sessions) and 100,000 rounds (20,000 sessions).
Why the numbers look the way they do:
Over 10 rounds, the edge is almost invisible. The expected loss is 0.04 bets, and the result is decided by a handful of hands. You finish ahead 45.6% of the time and not 49.6% because pushes and exactly-even sessions count as "not ahead": a short session often ends at exactly 0.
The chance of being ahead peaks at around 50 to 100 rounds , at 47.7%. With more rounds, fewer sessions end at exactly even. Past that point, the edge starts to drag the whole distribution down.
The median follows the mean. At 1,000 rounds the median session is −4 and the mean is −4. The swings are roughly symmetric around the expected loss. Blackjack doesn't have slot-style "most lose a little, a few win big" skew.
The normal approximation gets better with length. At 1,000 rounds and beyond it matches the simulation to within half a point.
A short winning session tells you nothing about the edge, and neither does a short losing one. With a 1.15 SD per round, a 100-round result anywhere from −19.5 to +18.5 bets is ordinary.

Bankroll risk: how long a balance lasts
The edge tells you the average cost per round. Your balance tells you how many rounds you can afford before a bad run ends the session. We simulated one-coin flat bets from four starting balances:
Starting balance (in bets) Lost it all within 1,000 rounds Lost it all within 10,000 rounds Doubled it before losing it all Average rounds to double or bust
10 not run not run 46.8% 76
20 62.4% 91.1% 46.0% 302
50 20.1% 76.5% 42.1% 1,861
100 0.8% 50.7% 35.0% 7,265
200 0.0% 14.5% not run not run
What the table shows:
A small balance is mostly a variance problem. With 20 bets, the edge costs only 4 bets over 1,000 rounds, but swings of 36 bets are normal, so 62% of sessions run out.
A large balance survives long enough for the edge to matter. With 100 bets you almost never go broke in 1,000 rounds (0.8%), but over 10,000 rounds about half of balances are gone.
Aiming to double up gets harder the more bets it takes. Doubling 10 bets takes 76 rounds on average and succeeds 46.8% of the time. Doubling 100 bets takes 7,265 rounds, and the edge cuts the success rate to 35.0%. The classic formula for a drifting random walk, P = 1 ÷ (1 + e^(2 × edge × B ÷ variance)), gives 35.2% for B = 100. That's within a fraction of a point of our simulation.
"Small goal, big bankroll" wins often but still loses on average. Starting with 100 bets and stopping at +10, you reach the goal 87.5% of the time. The other 12.5% of the time you lose all 100. The average result is −3.4 bets, which matches the edge times the 846 rounds played on average. The edge doesn't care how the outcomes are split.
None of these choices changes the edge per round. They only change how many rounds you play and how the results are spread. That's the same reason betting systems can't beat the edge: we simulated six betting approaches on our blackjack strategy page .

What the house edge means for Gold Coin and Sweeps Coin play
At sweepstakes casinos you play blackjack with two kinds of coins. Gold Coins are for fun and have no cash value. You get them free or when you buy a Gold Coin pack. Sweeps Coins come free, by daily bonuses, mail-in requests or as a bonus with some Gold Coin packs, and can be redeemed for prizes under each site's sweepstakes rules. No purchase necessary: you can always get Sweeps Coins free. Our guides cover what Sweeps Coins are , what Gold Coins are , how to get free Sweeps Coins and the mail-in (AMOE) route .
The coin type doesn't change the cards. With the same rules, a Gold Coin hand and a Sweeps Coin hand have the same house edge. What differs between games is the rules, so read the game's help or info screen. Look for the deck count, S17 or H17, the blackjack payout and the published RTP, and use the lookup table above to check the RTP against the rules.
Worked example: playing through a Sweeps Coin balance. Some sites require Sweeps Coins to be played through before they can be redeemed. Suppose a site requires 1× playthrough on a 20 SC balance, so you need to bet 20 SC in total. Here are three ways to do it on a base-rules table, from 2 million simulated sessions each:
Bet per round Rounds Expected loss Finished ahead Middle 90% of results Lost the whole balance
0.20 SC 100 0.08 SC 47.6% −3.90 to +3.70 SC under 0.01%
1 SC 20 0.08 SC 47.0% −8.50 to +8.50 SC under 0.01%
4 SC 5 0.08 SC 43.4% −16 to +16 SC 4.8%
The expected cost is the same every way: 0.41% of the 20 SC bet, about 0.08 SC. What changes is the spread. Bigger bets make the result far more volatile, and with 4 SC bets almost 5% of balances are gone within five rounds. Smaller bets take longer but keep the result close to the expected cost. The 4 SC row also finishes ahead less often, because a big loss can end the session early, and a short session more often ends exactly even.
Two cautions:
Rule quality matters more than bet sizing. The same 20 SC played through on a 6:5 table costs about 0.35 SC instead of 0.08: 1.77% instead of 0.41%.
Playthrough rules, minimum redemptions and which games count all vary by site. Some sites count table games at a reduced rate or not at all. Check the terms before you plan around them, and see our guide to Sweeps Coin redemption methods .
Whichever coins you play with, the edge is a cost of entertainment, not a way to earn. Treat Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins as play money for the game, and stop when it stops being fun.

Common house edge myths
"A 0.41% edge means I lose 0.41% of my balance each session." No. The edge is charged on every coin you bet, every round. Play 1,000 one-coin rounds and the expected cost is about 4 coins, whether your balance was 50 or 5,000. Replay a balance enough times and the edge can take all of it (see the hold example above).
"99.59% RTP means I'll get 99.59% of my coins back." RTP is an average per coin bet over a very long run. Any one session can land far from it: the middle 90% of 100-round sessions runs from −19.5 to +18.5 bets.
"All blackjack has about the same edge." Our 64 common rule sets run from a 0.16% player edge to a 2.16% house edge. The payout line alone (3:2 or 6:5) moves it by 1.36 points.
"After a losing streak, I'm due a win." In a game that shuffles every round, each round is independent of the last. The edge doesn't make up for past losses. It just keeps applying to every new round.
"A betting system can lower the house edge." Changing bet sizes changes how results are spread, never the edge per coin bet. In our strategy simulations no system lowered the cost per coin bet beyond simulation noise, and the Martingale cost more (0.72 per 100 bet) because a short balance can't always afford doubles and splits.
"I win most of my sessions, so my method works." A small target with a big balance wins often: 87.5% of the time in our +10 from 100 simulation. The losing 12.5% are large, and the average is still −3.4 bets.
"Sweeps Coins or Gold Coins change the odds." The coins are just what you bet. The rules of the specific game set the edge, so read them.
"Fewer decks always means a better game." With identical rules, yes, slightly. But single-deck and double-deck games often come with 6:5 or H17. A 1-deck 6:5 game (1.27% or worse) is much worse than a 6-deck 3:2 game (0.41%).

Blackjack house edge FAQ

Not present

What is the house edge in blackjack?
About 0.41% of each starting bet on a 6-deck table where the dealer stands on soft 17, you can double after splitting and blackjack pays 3:2, with perfect basic strategy. Across 64 common rule sets it ranges from a 0.16% player edge to a 2.16% house edge.

Not present

What is the RTP of blackjack?
RTP is 100% minus the house edge. That's 99.59% for our base rules, 99.38% with H17 and 98.23% with a 6:5 payout. Always read the game's rules, because the RTP depends on them.

Not present

How is the house edge calculated?
Either exactly, by adding up probability × payout for every possible hand under a fixed strategy, or by simulating billions of rounds. Our exact calculation gives 0.402% for the base rules and our 800-million-round simulation gives 0.406%, within the simulation's margin.

Not present

Why is 6:5 blackjack so much worse?
A paid blackjack happens on 4.53% of rounds. Paying 1.2 instead of 1.5 takes 0.3 of a bet off each one: 0.3 × 4.53% = 1.36 points. That more than quadruples the edge on a 6-deck S17 game, from 0.41% to 1.77%.

Not present

How many hands does it take for the house edge to show?
About 80,700 rounds before the expected loss equals one standard deviation of the result on a base-rules table. On a 6:5 table it's about 4,150 rounds. Over a few hundred rounds, luck decides far more than the edge.

Not present

Can the house edge in blackjack be negative?
With basic strategy only on rare rule sets: single deck, dealer stands on soft 17, double after split and 3:2 gave a 0.13% player edge in our simulations, and early surrender on a 6-deck game also gives the player an edge. These rule sets are uncommon.

Not present

What's the difference between house edge and element of risk?
House edge divides the average loss by the starting bet. Element of risk divides it by all the coins wagered, doubles and splits included. For our base rules that's 0.41% vs 0.36%.

Not present

Is the house edge the same with Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins?
Yes, if the game rules are the same. The coin type doesn't change the cards, only the rules do. Check the game's rules or info screen for the deck count, the dealer rule and the blackjack payout.

This is the sheet to print if you print only one. It fits the most common shoe game: 4 to 8 decks, the dealer stands on all 17s, you can double any first two cards and double after splitting, and blackjack pays 3:2. Played perfectly at these rules, our 400-million-round simulation puts the house edge at 0.42%. For comparison, copying the dealer (hit to 17, never double or split) gives the house about 5.7%.

Basic strategy is the best play for every starting hand against every dealer upcard, worked out with maths rather than hunches. Follow it and you give the house the smallest edge the rules allow: about 0.42% at a standard 6-deck table. It doesn't make blackjack a winning game. It just stops you from paying more than you have to.

Basic strategy is the best play for every starting hand against every dealer upcard, worked out with maths rather than hunches. No. With perfect play the house still keeps about 0.42% of what you bet at these rules, and you'll still have losing sessions. Basic strategy minimises that cost; it doesn't remove it.

The chart barely changes, but the cost of the game jumps by about 1.39% of everything you bet. That's more than three times the house edge of the whole 3:2 game. Look for 3:2 tables.
Every chart cell and figure on this page comes from our own finite-shoe calculation for the stated rules: exact card-removal maths for standing, hitting and doubling, with the dealer's hole card conditioned on no blackjack. We compared our 6-deck chart (dealer stands and dealer hits soft 17), our no-DAS chart and our 1- and 2-deck charts cell by cell with the published charts listed in our sources. The 6-deck charts matched in all 330 cells, and so did the no-DAS chart. Our 1- and 2-deck charts differed from the published ones only in near-tie cells (for example double-deck 11 against an Ace, within 0.3 coins per 100), and there we follow the published play. House-edge figures come from our 400-million-round simulation and published rule-variation tables.
